Impressive Squats from Melvin Anthony

Take that sucker down ass to the floor without belts, or knee wraps and then we can talk.
Its a lot of weight, but anyone can quarter squat 50% more than what they can squat ass to the floor.

I'm sure Needsize or Bfold could top this feat quite easily doing a quarter squat with respect to bodyweight ratios

Here a 200lb guy doing 600lb full oly squat for 3 reps with no belts, wraps or spotters.

Or Idalberto Arranda 170lb Cuban oly lifter doing 638lb for 2 reps

now that's impressive!

CoolColJ,

Melvin is a bodybuilder not a powerlifter. Two different things. Melvin is interested in working with reps and building larger muscles and not interested in entering a powerlifting competition. Why would it matter whether or not he squats below parallel?? There is a method of training called the overload principle. I gurantee that Melvins legs are 6 to 8 inches larger than these powerlifters. Plus Melvin maintains a 26 inch waist. These are remarkable proportions.

I too am a bodybuilder and I use a belt when I squat heavy. I also like to use higher reps. As I said before I have no interest in powerlifting, olympic lifting, or training with singles, doubles, or triples. So far, I have still been able to build a strong muscular physique.

Just stating what is impressive or not, what Melvin Anthony did does not impress me, I see a lot of guys quarter squatting like that at my gym, they don't have the legs to show for it either :)

To use your bodybuilder argument if you want big legs then a full ROM makes more sense.
I can get a 26inch waist no problem as well, but I ain't in the mood to get that lean :)
I used to carry a 28inch waist when I was younger and I was still quite fat then. I don't think waist size has anything to do with belt or no belt, its a diet and genetics issue.

I've seen Tom Platz squat nearly as much going all the way down.

Yes,

I really liked how Tom Platz trained his legs. This guy could squat 225lbs for 10 minutes straight. This guy was a true animal when it came to training legs.

well if a 170lb guy full squatting 638lbs for a double without a belt doesn't impress you then your not human :bawling:

What's impressive to you may not be be to someone else. Both of the pics you posted and the pic Louden posted impressed me.

Now THOSE guys are going ALL the way DOWN!!!

C-ditty :)

Gentleman!!!!

WTF was that this is exactly what I am talking about listen don't get me wrong That is impressive and to say the least a bit contradicting....I am at the gym and constantly I see kids wrapped, belt sinched, wrist wrapped, nice plush bar pad, and this look on there face like they are going to die and they unrack the 685 and quarter rep it and they are not even as big as you think they are but yet you have a guy (myself) who is taking it to the pocket...and the theory is..........You are going to have some really big glutes..... when you see a key figure like this, bodybuilder/role-model doing this it sends a message to kids just starting out or guy who are not well informed.... squat like this you get like that..........

Seems to me the powerlifters/strength athletes are always trying to sway people from the bodybuilding way of things on this forum. I don't care if some 170lbs with toothpick legs can squat 600lbs ass to the floor. Sure, it's impressive but their legs arent, compared to, say, Melvin Anthony's. Some of us train strictly for bodybuilding, and while strength increases are a definitely a good way of measuring progreess, I'd rather see an increase in thigh circumference than do some powerlifting routines.

Thats what I am talking about!!! I am glad somebody realizes this!

i still don't know the difference between an oly squat and a regular one

I am imp[ressed with the olympic lifters and the melvin guy but I really think that the people who impress me the most are those who have perfect form with the longest ROM

CoolcolJ, Are you joking? :D
I mean, most people here have seen your pictures...I don't know who you're comparing your legs to but most of the people I know who bodybuild seriously (not for competition but as a lifestyle) have quads/hams that couldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as yours. Don't take this as a flame, just saying things how I see them.

Let the haters hate.........I guarantee that Melvin is getting all the pussy he wants. While there bitching about some squat theory bullshit, Melvin is chatting up some fine ass girl getting his game on. Stop hating and start playing, its alot more fun.

I don't think Melvin's body appeals to most women. Then again, it's obvious he doesn't do what he does to get pussy. Awesome lift, but more importantly, awesome quads&hams.

Gym lifts certainly dont mean much to the Olympia judges but I am impressed that he would venture into the upper 600-pound range. I dont care how deep he goes (he isnt being judged in a powerlifting contest after all) just unracking and walking out that weight is a feat. My $.02

he he he.
