Important question for computer memory honchos...

Bought this notebook that takes ddr-333 memory. It came with 128mb.

I had a 512mb ddr-266 stick and I plugged it in. Store clerk said the computer was backward compatible to ddr-266. The computer works fine though it seems a bit slower than it might be.

It says that I have about 490mb of memory by using the ddr-266 512mb stick.

So....what is most cost effective for working with hundreds of pro photos?

Get a 1gb ddr-333 stick and remove the 512mb ddr-266 stick?

Get a 1gb ddr-333 stick and continue to use the 512mb ddr-266 stick?

Get a 1gb ddr-266 stick and continue to use the 512mb stick?

Get another 512mb ddr-266 stick to compliment the existing stick?

Get another 512mb ddr-333 stick to compliment the existing stick?

Thanks in advance........

Any sightings of that jnuts bor? Guys a real hard core techie.

Hell....lots of techies on the board. Speak up....I'm in the mode to buy some tonight.

Have a big project in two weeks. :)

It'll never be as fast as a desktop. That's not what notebooks are about. But if you want it go to where to the pics are being taken, yeah, you may as well make it the best notebook it can be.

First, you're going to be capped at the speed of the slowest stick on the memory bus. As long as that 512MB stick is in there, faster RAM will be slowed down to 233.

"Hundreds of pro photos"? If you have two memory slots, clear them both and get that puppy two sticks of 1GB 333MHz.

There are places that will give you a trade-in on the old stick -- not a lot but you don't have to eat the whole cost of it.

Drop the 266 and pick up two sticks of 1gb @ 333.

With the 512 stick in there... the 333 will run at 266.

Personally I would buy a 1gb 333mhz and use it with the 512mb 266mhz for now. 333 down to 266 is not something you're going to notice with the naked eye. The amount of memory you have is WAY more important than it's speed. Also, chances are your biggest bottleneck will be your slow laptop hard drive.

The cool thing about this is, you have the option to buy another 1gb 333mhz in the future if you feel like it. Theres no reason to drop a ton of money on two sticks right now when 90% of the time you're not going to be utilizing more than 1gb anyway.

Buy a single 1gb chip and expiriment with it a little. Try it alone. Try it with the 512. See what you floats your boat. You'll always have the option to buy another.
