lartinos said:I never looked at cops as be all that smart, well at least the ones who drive in circles on the street. Some of my friends went on to be cops. Not really good at anything and were the ones in my group of friends we'd occasionally smack around because they talked a lot but were pussies. It's a way for them to make up for their toughness and change their wussy perception by all.
While this may be true in the case of your "friends", you can't stereotype people like that. I am not a fucking pussy nor have I ever been. Are those guys out there? Hell yes, however the majority of individuals I have met in law enforcement are not like this. The public always focuses on the negative and never stops to thank law enforcement for all the good things they do. And yes there are cops out there that aren't the brightest but the same go's for almost all other career fields. Just having a degree doesn't make you "smart". I don't know what field you are in but I am sure I could point out plenty of scmucks, pussies, know it alls, and self absorbed assholes because every workplace has them.
If you had asked me 5-6 years ago If I would ever go into law enforcement I am sure I would have piped up with some smart ass remark about pigs or highway Nazis. I went to college for Electrical Engineering and afterwards found out that I wanted to do something that actually counted for something in the long run, something I enjoyed even if the money wasn't going to be the best. Life should not be all about pleasing yourself.
Yes, there are days when I wonder if I shouldn't change fields for the money, I'll never make six figures as a cop even though me and thousands of others put our lives on the line every day. The sad thing is that a large majority of criminals show a greater respect for law enforcement than your everyday Joe on the street. They know that we are simply doing our jobs by enforcing the laws, they know we don't make them.
Someone else mentioned Cops only hanging out with cops. You got this spot on, but you may have made the wrong assumptions. It's not because x individual thinks he or she is better then you its simply that Cops can relate to what other Cops go through better. Does your job entail going hands on with fucking sasquatch [sp], talking some guy away from the shotgun he has held to his wifes head, investigating cases of fathers molesting their own children, telling a mother and father that there only child just had his brains scattered across twenty feet of highway. Why do you think cops have the highest rate of suicide than in any other field? The highest rate of divorce at over 60%? Because we go through shit that nobody else sees or wants to deal with, a lot of things "normal" people will never understand so when we need to unload, get off the freaking emotional roller coaster that is our job, we talk to other Cops.
