I am not the worlds greatest internet expert..... as will become apparent.

Ok, this is my problem. My PC lately has been behaving a little strange (like turning off for no reason..). Now I have read that people can access my PC through ports (or summink) and can even download files of my machine.

I have also read that there is software available for download that can detect (and prevent?) this kind of thing. I would be really greatfull if someone could tell me where I could find it.

I have checked my machine for viruses from 2 web sites and a current version of Norton. Nothing.

Sounds like a Power Supply problem if is just simply shuts itself ALL the way off.
Sometimes it will only shut off for a Second and reboot.
New PC or Older one?

I use the PC for word proccesing frequently and never have this problem... I am not sure if it is the power supply. Maybe I'll leave the machine on overnight and see what happens.

It may also be set to shut down after a certain amount of time inactive. I bet that is the problem.

If your machine is unexpectantly losing power for no reason, good chance you have a problematic power supply. If you know a electrician or could goto a PC store that does repair and they could use a voltimeter to check out the power supply, if the unit is faulty it can lead to damage of other components so it is something that should be addressed. A new power supply costs around 40 dollars or so.

There are ways to remotely power down machines, but the machine would go through the shut down process if someone was using a program like back oriface to hijack your machine. Plus, if you aren't on the internet(unless you have a broadband connection(DSL, cable) in which you are always connected) and this occurs, that rules out remote control.

The part that you are talking about, where someone can actually get into your machine, is called sending you a server. Two things must be in place for this to happen. One, you must be connected to the internet and Two, you have no virus protection program. If you Norton's or McAfee you should be ok.
Also, when someone sends you a server you will generally see a small terminal window pop up on your screen, not always though. I doubt that someone is doing this though. Hackers generally will only do this to other hackers as a prank.
Chances are that you have your energy saver settings set to turn your machine off after a certain amount of time. This can be changed in your display properties.

It could be a couple other things as well. Once your PC shuts down can you immediately turn it back on or do you have to wait a little while? If it's the latter, it could be a heat issue. If not, it may be a power supply prob but it could also be a processor or memory prob. Defective memory can cause pc's to randomly reboot or power down. The processor has a thermostat in which the fan if connected to, if the processor gets too hot, it will shut down. Hope this helps.
BTW, it sounds more like a hardware issue than a hacker

Well thanks guys. I will check the settings, leave the machine on tonight and if I still have problems send the damn thing back (still under warranty).
