I like Amazing Grace & Highland Cathedral when played at the Edinburgh Tattoo, but I can't stand our national anthem, it's like listening to a dirge.

I got to go to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in '06. We scalped tickets on the Royal Mile to get in, it was awesome.

I just had some Nairn's Scottish Oat Cakes, freaking yummy.

YUM, YUM, YUM.

I wonder if the Scots invented oatmeal as well?

Oat Cakes? They just sound good. Are they sweet like pancakes or johnny cakes ( cornmeal pancakes)?

Don't look at me... I'm Irish and American Indian. Bad temper, great sense of humor. ;)

Of all the factors which influence the flavour of malt whisky, the cask in which it matures is the most influential: in some cases, it can contribute up to 90% of the flavour of the mature product.

By law, Scotch whisky must be matured in oak wood. Until 1946, most of this was European (Quercus robur), and came from Central Europe, France or Spain. Today, 95% arrives from the United States and are made from American White Oak (Q. alba).

Chemists now talk about ‘cask activity’, and believe the cask performs three crucial functions, described as ‘subtractive’ ‘additive’, and ‘interactive’.

This has nothing to do with Scot culture, which I know nothing about, though I remain entrenched in my digging on Scot chics... digressing, but I just your Morrison lyrics and that is my utter favorite poem that he recites... I dig that Spart. Gotta give it up to that poem

They have to use barrels that have been used for bourbon/whisky at least once before. By law american bourbon must be made in new oak casks. So the two industries help each other out. The Scottish distillers use the barrels as many times as they can and still maintain the flavor they desire. They are then sold to other distilleries, cut and sold for decorative purposes, or chipped into mulch. I got to visit a traditional cooperage at the Balvenie/Glen Fiddich distillery complex where they went over the whole process.

They also use port and sherry barrels/casks from continental europe for finishing multi-wood whiskys.

Everything in the distilling process is re-used or recycles. Left over millet from the barley malting is sold as cattle feed. After distilling the solids are refined and again sold as cattle feed. The cooling waters for the conensers on the stills is returned to the original water source. There is almost no waste involved. The Scots are pretty much the original recylers.

I'm a mortician and I would like for Morrison's "The Severed Garden" to play at my demise
as it is on an American Prayer in which the surviving Doors did instrumentals to Jim's recital

Spartacus start your own Morrison thread if you want but quit hijacking this one. This thread is about Scotland!!!!!!

and tabasco gets it's barrels from jack daniels
they put those peppers in a jack barrel
it's sealed on top by salt and aged

after tabasco is done with the barrel the barrel is chopped up and sold as flavoring firewodd kindling

Comes Death on a strange hour
Unannounced, Unplanned for
Like a scaring, over friendly guest you've brought to bed

Other than his opening line of Wow, Sick with Doubt, which if it doesn't hit you, then you must already have passed,
I dig his description of death
as this entity that was invited in and given a place to rest
sanguine yet creepy...

I took the supra back down and toured the tabasco plant while I was down there

one thing to see it hollywood style
a whole other to see some guy's 5 year old daughter bundled up in her pink coat
and that marvelous landscape and depth behind
that's what struck me the most when I went through his 30 pictures
the appreciation of the height and the cleanness of the area

it wasn't swiss alps
it was scottish green alps

I've been to Scotland many times and posted dozens of pics in the past.

And there aren't alps in Scotland.

Yes they are very impressive, like a scaled down version of the Rockies here in Colorado. The highest point in Scotland is like 4,100' so they don't have snow year round. In the winter they are blanketed in snow.
