Ideas for redoing stairs.....

The old boards are pretty beat up...they have to go.

I am evaluating several options here and find it tough to decide:

1) Oak treads at $31 per step....1.25 inches thick

2) Pine treads at $13 per step.....1.25 inches thick

3) MDF (dense particle board) at $6 per step then covered with carpeting. The cheapest way to go but carpeting on stairs gets beat up

Make my own oak treads at 1.5 inches thick at $22 per step but a lot more work. Can't beat oak.

Make my own pine treads at 2.0 inches thick at $16 per step with a lot more work. Thinking 2" thick steps would look knarly.

Doing steps in travertine/limestone with marble staircase sides. A great deal of work and expensive due to the marble but could be magnificent. I don't know if a magnificnet staircase is a good investment like kitchens and bathrooms are.

The staircase leads to the basement.....not real high profile though the basement will be nice. Doing hardwood flooring.

I thought some real estate types might know about the investment angle on jazzing up staircases.
any improvements increase the value so do-it-to-it...

I made a set of steps in my building trades class. I takes a lot of work, but it's also fun. When you start screwing the steps into place you see yourselff getting closer to the top, and it motivates you to keep going. The building trades class moved to a different building, and the room is now occupied by a different subject I believe. Those steps are still there leading to the storage room up top.

If you buy it so you can cut it yourself try to find the ones that have one side rounded. I forget the term, something like bullet nose or some crazy shit. It's been too long since I've done any contracting work. Good luck with it.

Yea....the pre made ones already have the bullnose.

I have router bits to round off corners but nothing to make a bullnose with a 1.5 or 2.0 inch board.

I really can't make up my mind on which way to go.
