I really dislike Christmas....

Maybe I'm a scrooge but what's the point of being stressed out all to hell, spending more money on people than you really have, getting crappy gifts in return??

Just seems like a total pain in the ass to me, what's the point??

Well, without getting too deep, it's called CHRISTmas because thats when we celebrate the birth of our Lord.

If you are stressed out about it, I would guess you need to trim back the gift giving and all that extra stuff.

Well I'm an atheist so that does nothing for me.

..

I still enjoyed being with the family... nothing wrong with getting *ALL* together every once in awhile and bullshiting.. gifts are nice to... it just a way of showing affection and appreciation.

Of course this all goes out the door if you don't like the people you are supposed to spend time with.

So why celebrate Christmas at all then? I'm not a jew so I don't celebrate hanakuh for example. I guess you just do it for the free gifts then?

I hate all holidays. Mostly it has to do with having to deal with The Evil Stepmom's family.

Sometimes family obligations require making sacrafices...

Some families... even though not truely christians... still celebrate the holiday - just because of that.. it's a nice holiday. I'd say that's 80 - 90% of peeps that celebrate... very rarely is Jesus mentioned..

No one knows when Christ was born for christ....
Unless you can tell me where it is in the bible....
Didn't think so....

No because everybody else does. and I'm not one of those asshole atheist that wants to ruin it for everybody.

And that was a part of my original post..spending money on people and getting crappy useless gifts in return.

I disagree strongly. I say the vast majority of Americans at least celebrate Christmas and go to church because they know why we are having this holiday. I don't mean to say that most are solid every day Christians, but they know what it's about. I'd say the percentage of people that do it just for the holiday without knowing what it means or because it's a nice holidays is about 15%.

its amazing how the media pushes limitations on the gift giving aspect of christmas. i feel this is what people stress most over-
now i have to buy her a Black Cadillac Escalade SUV w 22's to keep up the Jone's across the street.

Right...

if even close to 50% of the peeps that celebrate xmas went to church as part of the xmas celebration, the churches would have to set up pews in the parking lots....

That's not to say that they don't now the meaning of it, but very rarely is it part of their celbration.. normally: Santa, gifts, etc... but not jesus..

I never meant to imply you were an asshole, this is a free country do what you will.

Speaking just on the stress of the holidays, it is over comercialized for sure. A few years back I got so wore out with gifts and all that and I lost sight of why this holiday is here. So now I just get gifts for my immediate family and thats it. Parents , my siblings I get them a family gift and my wife. No friends gifts, or coworker gifts, etc, etc. I would kill myself with gift giving and need a vacation from the holiday if I kept that pace up. We send out a Christmas card to everyone, and thats all. I also do all my shopping online, and man, I enjoy the holidays WAY more. I also do all my shopping the first part of December, so thats a big help as well.

uummmmm....THEY DO. It appears you haven't been to church much less a Christmas service in quite some time. They usually have to set up a satalite service somewhere with a few large TV's so the extra 4-600 people at my current church can watch the service and listen to the message. My current church is quite small normally. Every church I've ever been too is this way. Especially after 9/11, the services have gotten even more engorged.

That's not to say that they don't now the meaning of it, but very rarely is it part of their celbration.. normally: Santa, gifts, etc... but not jesus..

I disagree strongly but I guess we';ll just have to agree to disagree.

That's a part of what agitates me about the holidays, I think it's pathetic they way people are manipulated and twisted into thinking material things = love.

Dont even get me started on the jewelry industry.

Yeah, I kinda get a kick out of the commercials that show someone getting a new lexus with a big red bow on Christmas day. If I had that kind of money, life would be so good.

And the percentage of hte population that hits up church?

I realize it's crowded, I've been.. last year, the year before, etc...

But there is NO WAY IN HELL.. 50% of the population, that celebrates xmas in some fashion, makes it to church either today or tomorrow...

Not a chance...

I have no doubts that when when an adult is asked what christmas is about they immediately say Jesus...

but... how many of them just provide that lip service, and how many acutally act upon that.

Shit... my family had two priests in 3 generations... the only hint of jesus at our xmas celebrations was the prayer at the table, which happend whenever we got together for a meal.

Those articles mention nothing about how many peeps make it to church...

Thats kind of cop out answer. If you are going to start questioning everything that is presented or accuse the people in this poll of just telling lies, then I guess we can't have any sort of productive discussion.

I think you are basing your view of this on YOUR family and not really a reflection of the majority of Americans.

If we use the standard +/- 4% margin of error, that still leaves roughly 55% of the population going to a church service. Still the majority and still much higher than your personal view on the stats.

I'm sorry this bothers you so much, but regardless I do wish you a Merry Christmas.

Who did I say lied? WTF? That's out left field broham.

OF course I am basing this on my experiences... and you are not?

Christmas is awesome when your young. Pretty good when your in your 20's, and blows when ur an adult. Atleast that's what I hear. :)

I dislike the gift giving part.

I'm pretty sure historians found Jesus was born in actuality in September.........Christmas is the celebration of His birth due to the effort by the Catholic Church to convert Pagans over to Christianity so they took a Solstice Festival & made it into an "approved" Catholic "festival."

The whole Christmas gift thing didnt' actually gain popularity until the early 1900's I believe, in part, to the Coca-Cola company making the Santa image into propaganda.......

I don't feel one NEEDS to go to church to communicate with one's God or celebrate the holiday.........IMO it's a time to be happy & be with family........

I REFUSE to get caught up in the commercialism - Anyone I give a "gift" to I make chocolate dipped pretzels, graham crackers, et al - because I LIKE to do it & give out little treat bags to various people because I want to......I will NOT go to the mall & buy someone some stupid sweater just cuz I am "expected" to give a gift.........The holiday has become WAY too "Gimme gimme gimme" which is say over-commercialized........

/endrant

christmas SUCKS!! all you fucking people on the road have lengthened my commute to the gym.....unacceptable. And those god damn garish lights EVERYWHERE!! I'm tired of it.....I don't give a fuck about the whole family thing anyway, I can barely stand them as it is. if I go to canada you can bet christmas won't even register on my calendar.

Christmas sucks.
I'm alone.. meeting lots of flaky women.. just gave away my cat to a new home.. saw my ex and she's very happy with her new bf
The positive spin is that everyone else is good and feeling loved. Awwww.

but...

BAH FUCKING HUMBUG :sulk:

"59% say they will attend a Christian Church on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day"

They SAY they will attend - not that they actually DID attend. Big difference. I can SAY I will attend church, but not actually go ...... which is what I bet many people do. Because we all know that people would never lie/misrepresent to pollsters. lol

Christmas is a pagan holiday, although people have brought religious connotations to it.

from Wikipedia:
"It is unknown exactly when or why December 25 became associated with Jesus' birth. The New Testament does not give a specific date.[13] Sextus Julius Africanus popularized the idea that Jesus was born on December 25 in his Chronographiai, a reference book for Christians written in AD 221........."

And it goes on and on.

Personally, I don't go to church, I am not a fan of organized religion. But I could care less what other people do, makes no difference to me if someone goes to church, doesn't go, etc.

As far as gifts - my husband and I do not exchange gifts for Christmas. After Christmas, we will go out shopping together, buy a few things for ourselves and say "Merry Christmas to you" lol. I don't expect a present, and neither does he. Although I did buy him a card. I imagine he bought me one too, but not sure.

I agree. Most don't go to church. Most people associate Christmas with santa and buying presents under a tree. Most have no idea what its really about.
