Some families... even though not truely christians... still celebrate the holiday - just because of that.. it's a nice holiday. I'd say that's 80 - 90% of peeps that celebrate... very rarely is Jesus mentioned..
rykertest said:I disagree strongly. I say the vast majority of Americans at least celebrate Christmas and go to church because they know why we are having this holiday. I don't mean to say that most are solid every day Christians, but they know what it's about. I'd say the percentage of people that do it just for the holiday without knowing what it means or because it's a nice holidays is about 15%.
TC2 said:No because everybody else does. and I'm not one of those asshole atheist that wants to ruin it for everybody.
And that was a part of my original post..spending money on people and getting crappy useless gifts in return.
JH1 said:Right...
if even close to 50% of the peeps that celebrate xmas went to church as part of the xmas celebration, the churches would have to set up pews in the parking lots....
uummmmm....THEY DO. It appears you haven't been to church much less a Christmas service in quite some time. They usually have to set up a satalite service somewhere with a few large TV's so the extra 4-600 people at my current church can watch the service and listen to the message. My current church is quite small normally. Every church I've ever been too is this way. Especially after 9/11, the services have gotten even more engorged.
That's not to say that they don't now the meaning of it, but very rarely is it part of their celbration.. normally: Santa, gifts, etc... but not jesus..

Dont even get me started on the jewelry industry.
hate to brake it to you but most of the time church is standing room only on Christ mass.sadly it ant like that the rest of the year.JH1 said:Right...

JH1 said:And the percentage of hte population that hits up church?
I realize it's crowded, I've been.. last year, the year before, etc...
But there is NO WAY IN HELL.. 50% of the population, that celebrates xmas in some fashion, makes it to church either today or tomorrow...
Not a chance...

lmao he ^^^^^^^ didn't go to jared.TC2 said:"HE went to Jared!!"
Oh yeah...go fuckin marry him then bitch!!
JH1 said:I have no doubts that when when an adult is asked what christmas is about they immediately say Jesus...
but... how many of them just provide that lip service, and how many acutally act upon that.
Shit... my family had two priests in 3 generations... the only hint of jesus at our xmas celebrations was the prayer at the table, which happend whenever we got together for a meal.
Those articles mention nothing about how many peeps make it to church...

rykertest said:Thats kind of cop out answer. If you are going to start questioning everything that is presented or accuse the people in this poll of just telling lies, then I guess we can't have any sort of productive discussion.
I think you are basing your view of this on YOUR family and not really a reflection of the majority of Americans.
If we use the standard +/- 4% margin of error, that still leaves roughly 55% of the population going to a church service. Still the majority and still much higher than your personal view on the stats.
I'm sorry this bothers you so much, but regardless I do wish you a Merry Christmas.
