I need your opinion on training equipment:

I need your opinion on traning equipment:

As many of you know, I'm working on making a lot of my own pieces. I have found a few quality welders, one in particular that makes sleds at very nice price. I want to ask your opinion on something though. If you could buy a shiny black sled with tether for $150, or an unfinished steel sled for $80, which would you buy? All other factors remain the same, the only difference is eye-appeal. Assuming you were going to purchase one (I know many of you make your own or make them out of other materials), what would you choose?

The $80 one with a can of spray paint, it will get scratched up and dirty being dragged.

Maybe if it's a good powder coated paint or something like that but otherwise save the money for beer.

The cheaper one.

I can't think of any reason to get the pretty one, off-hand.

Here's my take: The whole point in me finding welders and marketing this stuff in the first place is to get the things people need to train with to them at a better price, one that's affordable. No one should have to break the bank to buy a GHR or reverse hyper...certain items have patents though, and I can't make them yet. However, the things I can make will be a lot cheaper "unfinished."

I also find that it appeals to a hardcore audience that's buying it to use the hell out of it, and not let it sit in the garage. I like knowing I'm selling to people like that.

Here's an idea:

If you get the unfinished one, you could always have a logo or gym name (Mammoth Barbell?) painted on it.

I've heard of some people doing that on their weightbelts......:D

I was toying with the idea of impressing/embossing (??) the logo into the metal. :)

That's his point...just buy it unfinished, it's going to go back that way anyway...the way we train.

I think for the home gym people the answer is a unanimous vote for the cheaper unfinished version. I think the only people who would want one with a good paint job would be commercial gym owners and I don't see them in line to buy dragging sleds.

On the other hand I would pay more for one that was bigger to fit more weight or one that had flanges to seperate the weight from the bottom of the sled, ect. I am always down for bells and whistles.....what can I say, I watched too many saturday mornin cartoons as kid.

i just bought one for $110. its on the way now. its finished (black)

i would think the way you market it would be the key. indicate its unfinished so colleges/teams/gyms etc can paint it their branding or at least their color scheme. for those that drag on concrete...well, they can paint the top. for those that are just "hardcore" they can drag "nekkid". hehehehe
