I need Madden 2004 tips

I have what you'd call a gambling fetish. I lost about 60 bucks playing my friend in Madden. His team is the Eagles and 75% of his plays he runs Staley offtackle. The thing is, I can't stop it. I've tried using the Fins, Raiders, Rams, Bucs, etc. My usual defensive scheme is a 4-3 or 4-3 over w/ lots of blitzes. No matter what, he still picks up 5-9 yards a play. I even went into goal line a few times. It's driving me up the wall. So I need some tips. Best way to stop the run, best team to use, when to switch players, etc. Anything would help.

Run a 4-6 if possible or create it in your profile, run it and bring one of the safetys into the box and control him, if you can't stop it with 9 guys in the box then you may need glasses...lol

I like playing a 3-4 with very few blitzes. Basically I aim to avoid a big play from their offence. I don't mind giving up a few yards and well earned 1st downs here and there if I'm in control.

Man QB Spy is my staple, followed by 2 Deep. I blitz with OLB Blitz, ILB Blitz and Fox. All out of the 3-4 with the DBs playing bump-and-run. Note that the safeties always drop back into zonal coverage in these plays. I don't really call any other plays, except for LB Blitz out of the Dime when they're throwing with 4 receivers... Works well for me. Offence is more my problem :)

Also, try shifting your DEs a step to their outside. And spread the LBs.

I don't know if you've got the same plays on Madden 2004. I'm on 2003.

Who knows how to toggle your play selection so that you can select a play but navigate others to fool an onlooking opponent?

I like some of the Nickel blitzes this year...no 46 for the Chiefs, and the 4-3's not all that great thus far.

If you know which side he's going to run to, move one of your linemen out a little, or a linebacker in a little, and they'll have a better shot at catching him.

A "gambling fetish"?

I'm the same way with booze. Never thought of calling it a fetish though. That makes it sound better, like I'm a sexual deviant instead of a drunk.

That said, always bet on black.

Been a Lions fan since I was 6 yrs old. Should be a fun season to watch. I'm predicting 6-10 w/ an outside shot of 8-8. 2006 is their year, SB at home!

Here is some advice-
1) stop gambling against your buddy as he is obviously better than you
2) learn how to takle - most of the people I play who can't stop the run can't make the takle or overpersue (leading to a missed tackle) - funny - just like real-life
3) learn how to run the ball - I will bet you can't gain yards on the ground (hence why it drives you up the wall that he gains yards on just about every down) - FYI I routinely rack up like 300-500 yards on the ground, and have a great run D (I would say close to 50% of the time my opponent's run yards are negative) - If you understand how to run, you will understand how to stop it.... I can run all day long on my "pass happy friends" and the only people that can stop the run are my friends who also know how to run the ball well...
4) Don't rely on shifting your end out or something like that, this is just a gimmick and any good player will use it against you (because you have your guy out of position) If you put 9 guys in the box the guy will just PA pass on you for a quick TD...
5) Learn how to play NBA live or some other lamea$$ no skill game

I go with the nickel. Move your D-line out, or shift to the side he runs it to (usually wide side or strong side). The 46 will work also

i use the exact same philosophy as you bro but just different plays. I use the giants (they are my team) and run a 3-4. but the catch is that i replace my right DE with holmes (a DT). so now i have 2 DT's on the line and 1 DE (strahan). i dont mind giving up 2 yard on a run play, but no one gets past my line backers (well very rarely).

i like to run 3-4 mid-strike, 3-4 OLB blitz, 3-4 man QB spy or, 3-4 double man when there is 2 WR in.

when there is 3 wide recievers run nickel
when there is 4 WR run dime
and 5 run quarter.

good luck

peace bro

Actually, I run pretty often, but maybe not enough. Eagles are solid against it. I have no probs on offense, I can keep up with him but he always runs the clock so he gets the ball last. The only 2 plays he runs is Deuce lined up in the I off tackle right and Thrash Go route which rarely works. His O line gets so much push on my D his minimal run is 4-5 yards.

FYI, just got done playing a game he won by 3 and Staley had 24 carries for 147 yards w/ 77 yds after 1st hit. (4 min quarters)

Ok, I think the best advice is to control your SS and make sure you don't overpursue. The DB AI is quite shocking, I wonder if its improved in 2004?

I like to play big, strong safeties. In my current team I had a 197 pounds safety who was getting run right over by any opposition RB, it was quite ridiculous. I moved a bigger, better CB to the position and the change has been great. Somebody like Archuleta does the job nicely. Its also a good idea to make sure your CBs aren't too piss weak either.

Also, try to get some fast outside LBs, particulary strong-side considering that's where he runs.
