I need Bench 1RM advice please

I plan to try a 1RM on bench in two weeks (when I finish my HST cycle) and I need some advice on how much to try based on my 5RM. Saturday I benched 125x6, good form, medium grip to ribcage below breasts, and with a pause. I would like to try a BW 1RM, which would currently be 150. Since I train alone its important that I dont overdraw my checking account.

Do you guys think 150 is too much of a stretch? Would 145 be doable?

Careful....your bodyweight and your 1RM may not be the same thing. You might be able to bench more. ;)

More than my fatass weighs?? Not a snowball's chance spatticus.

125 for six reps was to failure, I barely was able to rack it. Is 25lbs over that too much to consider for a 1RM? Need your expert opinion sister! (where's the smiling for begging?)

if you can do 125 for 6 reps, with good form.. then 150 should be no problem. Go for it. Hell if it were ME, id probably try more :)

I think 150 is very doable. If your in a gym and unsure then just ask someone to spot you...otherwise ya gotta roll it.

there's the problem though. I use my stepdad's homegym, which is well equipped, but I train alone. I do not ask him to spot me anymore because he just distracts me with all the typical guy "encouragements" and I just get a mental block when he's there. Hard to explain.

....also there's the issue of his hands being on my boobs at the bottom of the stroke. :worried:

:) 150 is yours! BUT you gotta KNOW you can get it ..what you should be asking is is how many reps we think u can get ;)

i vote for 3 :)

thats ony 25lbs over your working weight, you should be able to hit that easily. With bench, if you fail, you can always slide the bar off to the side, I had to do that many times back in the day when I trained alone

I never trust those online formulas. Doesn't compare to real world lifting, IMO.

Look back my original post guys...."medium grip to ribcage belowbreasts". The boobs dont come into play. I also keep a pretty flat back too.

Alright I will bench 150lbs in two weeks!

And I'll use the slide off to the side technique in the event a metorite comes through the roof just then and hits me in the head.

Well, it is pretty accurate at predicting my 1RM. Of course, it may be more accurate for certain weight regions or for some people. (Depending on fast twitch vs slow twitch percentage?) Have you actually given it a try and compared its predictions with your known 1RM?

I have, I dont like em either. They can be accurate within like 10%-15% on most exercises....but thats still alot. I'd rather just warm up and keep taking jumps intill i find my 1RM :)

due to the mention of your breasts, i can no longer think clearly, but i'm sure 215-225 should be yours. no problem.

Anya, why not arch your back a little when you do your 1rm?

150 is only 25# more, but it's also 20% more than 125#, your 5rm.

Do you plan on doing a 2rm? maybe you'd get a better idea of your 1rm. You could try 135x2. and then go for the 150 if that was easy...

Keep in mind she's never tried a 1RM; I know personally I run into mental issues when the weight gets REALLY heavy for me. I've been working on that by doing more work at 90% - 95% of 1RM; even if only for one set.

That said, I think you should go for it, although I'd hit 135 for a single, not a double; don't want to wear yourself out, just give yourself some confidence you can move that weight.

Agreed, JJ. I know using heavier weights with 4 and 5 board presses has helped me mentally to get used to holding and using heavier weights. That way when I go for a 1 RM it isn't the heaviest weight I've ever unracked and it doesn't affect me as much mentally.
