I need a GPS but I'm lost

(still drunk by the way)

There's so fucking many and I have no idea on which ones are easy to use and good and which suck balls.

My requirements for it:
Compatible with MGRS
waterproof
runs off AA batteries
downloadable worldwide topo maps
easy to use (large buttons and backlight option)
downloadable river and lake features.

I'll be deploying with it as well as camping and fishing with it in the US.

Any suggestions?

I have a fancy one and a cheap one from walmart. I only use the one from walmart. It's so easy. It's a magellan. I went on a 2 week elk hunt in CO and they were my life line. My walmart one came through just fine. YOu can download maps, and set it up for land or sea.

You want a ruggedized GPS, and that isn't going to be cheap. Do you guys get issued PLGRS?

Yes we do, but I've heard they're crap (never personally used one) and it's coming down the line that it's recommended for everyone to have their own.

what do you mean by topo maps? There really isn't shit available for the desert except the stuff we have from NIMA.

Almost all gps units have a datum select which allows you to use MGRS

Says only available NON US but I wonder if you can still get them here?

I have a commercial Magellan SporTrac color
10 Meg for downloadable maps.
Like jnuts said, many urban areas aren't covered, so I usually just
use the track features to go out and come back..

I'd like to get the Meridian color as it uses SD card so you can put 128 meg in it vs the limited internal storage of the S-trac.

I did one GeoCache hunt and it was real fun.
There are web sites with hunts all across the country and various difficulty ranges.
