I got 2 8' 2x4s and 12 wood screws at Home Depot; $7.85.
Had the 2x4s cut into 3 32" pieces each.
Screwed 2 of the 2x4s together on top of each other (effectively creating one 32" 4x4--they wouldn't cut 4x4s and besides this was cheaper)
Then centered 2 of the pieces at the ends of the "4x4" and screwed them in. Imagine a big "H". The part you put your toes on (the "4x4") is approximately 5" off the ground (2x4s are actually about 1 3/4" thick). I have 2 32" pieces of 2x4 left over.
I plan on using this with the smith machine and perhaps with the leg curl machine (from behind).
Looks great. The people at my work are going to look at me funny when I walk in with this tomorrow morning!
