I do feel for you. Aussie and NZ Customs are world notorious MoFo's when it comes to food imports. More strict than any other countries I ever visited.

That's a government boondoggle if I've ever heard of one, just like us boycotting Canadian beef because of a couple MadCow cases. Canadian Beef was actually lower priced, so of course American farmers would want to prevent its entry into the US. It's the agricultural lobbies that drive these rules, worried you might find a lower price outside your border. If that's so, so be it. Either figure a way to lower your price point or appeal to a nationalist base.
