I know this, but im not sure on how to approach this. i want all the best benefits and all i can get out of the deal.. but bottom line i really want the training. i really want to do this. i havent spoken to any recruiters yet.

Look the first thing you should do is talk to people who are doing the job you want to do. The guys on EF that are giving you advice have no idea about what that job is so they won't be the best source for that info. Talk to Marines and see if the feel you get from them is the one you are looking for or not. You wouldn't talk to a marine about what it is like to be a stock broker would you? The next thing is talk to your family, they are very important in this decision. They have to support you for your success and your failure will effect them very much. Then after all that if you feel that you still want to make the move it is easy to get the most out of the service, it has been around for a long time and the system isn't that complicated. If you get that far and still feel you want to make the move pm me and I'll set you up right. Good luck in what ever you choose and my respect for even considering it, if more people where of your mindset a lot more would get done.

Hey Guns I'm not disagreeing with all of what you said, a lot of it is right on but there are many benefits that one can recieve from being in as I'm sure you know. I served and then took a break, in the jobs that I worked while I was out I blew past my peers do to my time in service(benefit to me). Also I had only been to Canada and Mexico before service and now I've been to over 40 countries, six this year alone(benefit to me). I have Veteran benefits for the rest of my life(benefit to me). Last year I cleared six figures income plus had free housing, medical and dental(huge benefits to me). Bottom line is the service has a lot to offer, yes there can be the ultimate price but that is true in many jobs.

the sole purpose, is still serving. and if u get asked to deploy and run around in a shitty hot desert waiting to be blown up by an IED, benefits mean squat. and no one will care if ur still stuck on 'whats in this for me?'

albeit those who join now, in a wartime, are usually of the 'serving' mindset - but during peacetime, shitloads of people who enlist desiring 'benefits', join, and which is why we get so many shitty ass soldier-wannabees during peacetime, who scoff at having to possibly fight and die when a war is announced.

Ya I got ya man, serving is the main reason someone should join. I think he started the thread in that attitude, he talked about serving and helping. I just don't think anyone in the military truely gives selfless service. Sure it is a great philosophy but I don't think it is needed. In fact those who strive to be the best they can be usually end up being the best soldiers imo as long as they have a balance. I just won't deter anyone from serving, it has without a doubt been the best move I have ever made and I will reap the benifits from it as long as I live.

Now as far as mission belief, most of america sells out anyway so I'm not so big on that one anymore anyway. Take for example "The deadliest Catch", do you think those guys really believe in putting their ass on the line for some fat fuck in Mississippi at the casino buffet line? Take about someone doing something for a stupid cause. I could give a million examples like this so I downplay that bit, though it does matter.

Let's see, most of the worlds leaders in the 50's and 60's fought in WWII. A lot of the leaders durning the 80's and 90's fought in Vietnam. I wonder who will be making decisions in 20 years, good chance folks from Britain, Australia, Korea, Canada and the US that have done tours in the Stan and the Box.
