I have a problem here..

I'm not sure where to begin with this..Okay. So here goes, I have a shit job that does not pay enough to live off, so I'm trying to decide what to go to school for. At the same time I'm also worried that if I do go to school for something that I would not be able to pass my classes because I have always SUCKED big time in a classroom type environment.
I learn very quick hands-on or when someone actually shows me how to do something. Working out and living a healthy lifestyle are my main passions. The reason I tell you this is because my job needs to accommodate that lifestyle. I have went back and forth with the thought of becoming a police officer since everyone tells me I should be one and I like helping people, but I don't think I would like the type of hours they work>12 hour shifts< fuck that!
I've worked a lot of different crap jobs over the years and I have an idea of what I like and don't like and what I can tolerate until I find something permanent.
I don't like having a "boss" looking over my shoulder bothering me all day, I don't like sales if its the type where you have to talk someone into buying something they don't want.
My dream would be to work side by side with someone that wants to teach me everything they know, that is not physically demanding at all, allows me to be able to get my workouts in everyday, and when at work be able to step away for a few seconds to slam a protein shake.
Maybe I just needed to vent a little or something. I feel a little stupid even writing this but who knows maybe something will come of it.
Off to work I go

There are still master/journeyman/apprenticeship vocations out there....plumbing, sheetmetal, electrician, etc. Check your local union halls for listings and such.

What about going into physical therapy/occupational therapy? Not great money, but you can make a living, you're helping people, no shift work, not a lot of abstract theory, it's somewhat physical and as far as I know you're working by yourself one on one with your clients.

The type of mentoring you're talking about is what you get when you go into a trade, like electrician, plumbing, etc. and while those can be good jobs (eventually), it's shit work/pay in the beginning.

I was going to say this also; please don't go the academic route based on what you described, it is long - and often painful for students who are not academic oriented. A trade can be very fullfilling and you can make lots of money at a young age.

Fireman. Have to be fit to pass the test and do the job.

Pay is ok and you have time off to moonlight or workout like crazy.

Shit they make great money here! Though now they are requiring them to get their DPT.

it's not as easy as it sounds though
hard to get in trade unions, esp in a shitty building economy.
lotsa wait lists, plus once in it doesn't gurantee a job.
and for the first few years you'll be making 50-70% scale, which isn't that much after dues/taxes/health ins deductions.
you gotta hustle to stay working and be prepared to have bouts of unemployment.
there is money to be made but i would never recommend it without a caution.

I gave the whole plumbing union thing a try for almost 4 years and hated every fuckin minute of it. I told myself in the beginning that it was worth it because of the good money. Having to worry all the time that you will be laid off when a certain job ends gets really old quick, and so does sweating your ass off for 8-10 hours straight and having any dust in the air stick to your sweating body and then getting in your car at the end of the day not having any energy to do anything and fighting to stay awake during your drive home, Only to get home, take a shower, and want to relax.< Like I said in the first post I don't want something that is very physically demanding, so construction jobs are out of the question. I've been down that path and don't plan on doing it again.

Why not get your associates in nursing. I got min an love being a RN. he thing abou it is that if your bos starts t piss you off you can have a new job tomorrow. Nursing school is not hard and it is a 2 year program. Where do you live?

Minnesota, I don't know man I bet there is A LOT involved with that schooling. Just sayin.

Wow, so you want to work short hours and not very hard while making shitloads of cash with little education/training. Good luck with that. I think what you need to do is find a wealthy sugar momma bro. Just sayin.

You have to do something that you enjoy, while money is necessary to live don't just go into a career field because it will make you alot of dough. Money isn't happiness. I went to college for Electrical Engineering but ended up getting into Law Enforcement because I wanted to do something I enjoyed, and I do enjoy my job. If your passion is helping people there are plenty of options. I would think on it for a while don't just jump into something you may regret later.

Dude if you could see 95% of the RNs in this world it would be a no brainer for you. I am telling you. School is not hard for nursing.

I never said shitloads and I want to go to school for something, I guess I'm just not sure what. I don't want to waste my time anymore. I've been doing that for 28 years and I got sick of it a long time ago. I think I just need some type of guidance or something.

I get ya bro. That's definitely gonna be a tough one. Any interest in real estate or insurance sales? Dated women who did both and they always had a ton of cash. Of course, your not going be make a pile working sub 8 hour days, but at least you would have time for workouts n shit.

When you say insurance sales are you talking the guy I pay my car insurance to every month who works for farmers insurance? That type of insurance stuff?

lol no, no, he'd still be broke doing that. Have you seen him? :worried:
I suppose I could just buy Twinkies and ho ho's in bulk and sell them to your fat ass for double the price. That would definitely land me some big money.

Not so much, I believe the whore I once dated sold life/home insurance. I can't give you details on how to get into that shit, I build roads. I think selling any type of insurance can be good if know what you're doing and have the right connections. Real estate is where it's at if you ask me, well where I'm at anyways. Mega cake!

What is your job now anyway?
I work for Life Fitness in production Making their cardio equipment. I don't hate it, I just tolerate it for now until I can pull my head out of my ass.

I know he does homeowners too, I don't know what else though.

Still there? I thought they would have fired your ass by now :)

Anyway, you are familiar with the equipment obviously. Have you looked into sales for one of the specialty companies in your area? I hate 2nd Wind myself, but they do have a lot of locations where you live, and I'm sure they have competition too. It fits all your requirements- No schooling needed, you'll learn on the job. If anything you'll be bored most of the season, these high end stores don't see a ton of traffic, so you'll have plenty of time for your meals every 2-3 hours. Most places want you in good shape, you can lift while you're at work using the floor models during the 4-6 hours of dead time a day. You'll most likely work standard 8 hour shifts. I don't know what they pay around there, but I give my floor monkeys $13 an hour plus commission. Yearly they pull 35k-50k depending on their ability, which isn't bad considering the state we are in has a low cost of living.

Sounds pretty good Joe. maybe PM can hook you up? After hooking you up maybe tell you how to get a job with them?

Ever thought about a Athletic Training degree...usually your days don't start till about 2pm. I was in the same boat as you for about 6 years after I got my Pyschology degree and decided to go back to school. Right now I'm at the end my third year with one more to go...if you want more info let me know, be glad to help.

find something in the health \ fitness industry.

when you love what you do, you never have to go to work.

plenty of options in that field. puddles mentioned equipment sales

or you could be a personal trainer. if you are very entrepreneurial

you could open a gym.

first thing you need to do is clearly define what you want and need.

put it on paper. organize your thoughts in black and white. set realistic

short term objectives and long term goals.

we all create our reality with our thoughts and our communication.

unfortunately most people are not aware of this and they work in

jobs they hate and they have financial problems.

read the book, "think and grow rich" it's not just a book about making

shit loads of money, it's also a book about realizing your dreams.

I read it when I was 18. Some other smart dude suggested I read it. Good post though.

becoming a fireman in texas is not easy.
in farmers branch for instance, last year they had 30some openings.
over 3,000 people applied.
30 jobs/3,000 applicants, not good odds

That is 100% accurate. We are in Michigan, but my brother just applied to the Austin, TX fire department. 3500 applicants for a class of 60-80. Not very good odds at all. He has gone through the first round which is just a basic test. He scored average so he has about 1000 or so people ahead of him with a better score. They make it really hard to get the job. It is like an 8 step process.

Can I ask how old you are? How much time do you have to devote to furthering your education?

ever think about being in the reserve or guard?
get the right mos and it could be a good gig, esp if you have no kids

Suicide bomber. It pays well and you don't have to worry about benefits.

I was in the regular army when I was younger. It was not for me. I'm not a person who deals well with someone who disrespects me that is either A)half my height and size, or B) a higher rank than me and thinks that that rank gives them the right to be a dick instead of a leader like they should be, or a combination of A & B.

Where you from? Did you apply in farmers branch?
