i got my SAT's back!

Do people straight out of highschool need SATs to get into college? I didnt go to college straight out of high school, but when i did go all i needed was proof of a GED or HS diploma.

we did ACT's in highschool....no SAT's in the midwest unless your planning on going to a coast school, ya don't take them

thanks, choosing between the following schools for either computer engineering or computer science, probably the former:

university of illinios urbana champagne
rennsalear polytechnic institute
case western reserve university
penn state university
georgia tech but i doutb ill get in :/
syracuse
university of michigan (also VERY doubtful)
university of rochester

btw i have a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale all honors and AP classes. if u have any other colleges u think i should look at let me know

Well I think you've got U of Illinois in the bank.....when I was in highschool they required a 3.5 and a 26 or higher on the ACT, not sure how that translates to SAT's though.. 26 out of a scale of 36. Will you have 4 years of math and all that?

University of Massachusetts at Amherst, great place for school (like Ann Arbor) and one of the top Computer Science depts...

You have to buy it to get the list of the best computer engineering schools though. Purdue might be a good engineering school too. At least their graduate engineering is highly ranked.

Out of curiousity, why are you considering going out of state to study computer engineering? isn't that field oversaturated, and an out of state degree will cost 3x as much as an in-state degree.

well in state penn state is 17k with room and board, case is like 40k but they will probably give me about 20k in aid so that will equal about 20k. illinios is only 17k i think and the only one rediculously expensive is university of michigan at 40k with little to no aide. the others fall somewhere in between and as far as the field goes........ computer engineers are in more demand then IT and comp sci guys...... which would be my alternatives........ last choices would be to study biomedical engineering at case western which has the number one program in that then go on to med schoool or go to my hometown's university of pittsburgh and study medicin there........ or study something else and go to law school. keep the ideas flowing. and does anyone know where i can find out what jobs are in high demand?????

o and btw im also looking at drexel university because of thier co op program..... it seems that this really really helps getting jobs out of college

uma seems like an OK school i think i can do better tho

RPI sucks. Terrible weather. Worse female:male ratio (was 1:5 back in 91, down to 1:3 or 4 now). Over priced in my opinion - and I'm a grad from there.

Case is ok. Terrible location (bad part of Cleveland) but a pretty decent school. My fraternity has a chapter there and I've met alot of the alumni from there.

Penn State is cool, but isolated in the middle of nowhere. Tons of people (and hot chicks). Tuition (especially in state) is very reasonable, but housing/parking will rape you and leave a long bloody scar.

Syracuse and Rochester? Just cut your sack off now and have it surgically reattached when you graduate and move back down from the tundra.

U of I would be cool, IMO. Plus you're somewhat near Chicago for a social life and great job market.

With a 1400, and a solid 3.5 to 3.8......Michigan will not be a problem.

When I was looking for schools, I got accepted to Ann Arbor with a 3.5 and a 30 on my A.C.T., I took the S.A.T. but they didn't ask for it.........

Of course this was 11 years ago....... ;) Things might have changed since then.

Not really close enough to chicago to be going there very often in champaign....champaign is a pretty sweet city all by itself though.

if you wanna be close to chi town come to NIU :) 45 minutes away from downtown chicago

My bro is doin his PhD in Math at Univ of Ill Urbana.... hes a fuckin genious unlike me... haha , we got Comp Science here! and we are in Boston, a great place to find a job!

STFU. I will wreck you. UR is a good school for medicine. I went to SU and it sucks academically, but the bitches are easy and the sports kick ass. Your degree means nothing. Your brains, everything. Skip engineering, it sucks.

no one knows if the fact that the computer engineering workforce is oversaturated is true?

I think as long as the industry isn't going extinct, then you shouldn't worry about it too much. You have to first find things that you love to do, and then worry about the logistics later.

Going into an industry based only on financial considerations will likely make you miserable. That isn't to say pay doesn't mean anything; just make sure you really like whatever you decide you want to do for a living.

BLASPHEMY! You are WRONG sir!

Well, not entirely wrong, it is hard and a lot of work; but the job market out of school is very favorable.

yes and im a nerd and like science and engineering and computers!

Why not one of the other engineering fields?

Also you have to take into account 3 things

1. Engineering degrees are not really transferrable. By that i mean, with most any other degree about 70-90 credit hours are similiar between degrees. Like there is only 35 credit hours difference between a biology and a chemistry degree, and maybe 60 hours difference between a journalism and a chemistry degree. Not so with engineering, engineering is almost 90% engineering. If you switch majors you lose most of your credits unless your school as "20+ hours of general studies" type of thing. And the math, that'll stick too.

2. Engineers are being trained in China and india, and in the next 20 years the engineering market may look the same way the computer market does now, with tons of outsourcing. Engineering work can be done in India and emailed back to the US.

3. Engineering is one of the hardest degrees you can get.

Where did you go pitbullstl?

Boardin- U of M will cost a crap load of cash if you are from out of state unless you get good F.A. That said I went there and it was a blast- you would love it, and a top level school overall... and the football kicks ass of course...

Better looking chicks at U of I though... it is fun there too and a good school... Oh also the football sucks...

Penn state I don't know about any good looking chicks there, but I hear it is a non-stop drinking fiasco and a good time... but their football sucks...

I don't know about the rest... Also listen to what nordstrom says about engineers... on top of the outsourcing, many companies would rather pay a cheaper young engineer than an expensive older engineer if you get my drift... (easy to find a job when you start-harder to find work as you get older...)

thanks, im not sure about the whole outsourcing thing......... i cant worry about that too much and i dont feel like it will be that big of a deal. eventually in the other countries they will demand the same rights we do and then wages will even up....... and if i get out of college with an engineering degree (not computer like electrical or mechanical or something) and the job market is not good at all. i know alot of great lawyers that went undergrad as engineers.... just some food for thought....

I got an 1150 on my SAT.
STOP LAUGHING!
Right now my GPA is about 3.0 at this point in my junior year. Hopefully it'll get up to at least a 3.3 by the end of senior year.

I hope I can get into the Univ. Colorado at Boulder. If not, I'll probably tough it out at Colorado State.

Michigan is the best school on your list.

G-Tech is solid too.

RPI is a medicore engineerign school in upstate NY, terrible weather.
Penn State is garbage, big ass state school filled with PA idiots
CWRU is too midwestern; if you wanna live in cleveland, go for it lol
Illinois is all right
Syracuse = $33K per year, worthless.

G tech and michigan are the only ones worth considering

Not true.

Spending an extra 90k on an out of state ivy league school isn't going to give much benefit over an in state college.

Go to DeVry and STFU. ;)
