I joined the Navy today! I'm a DEP. I'll be leavin on June 25 of next year. I'm an Operations Specialist! WOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Damn.... an OS  ! I told you to only go in as an ET or an officer:mad:

Well, good luck..... did you sign for 4 years or 2? How long is your "A" school and where is it?.... hopefully not Great Lakes..... Oh, but your from that area huh?

I'm going to do one of the officer programs...I'll eventually be an officer...I guarantee it. My A school is 10 weeks long and it's in Dam Neck, VA.

So how many years of your life did you just sign up to waste????

Oh, I forgot.... I think that OS's have a really bad Sea-Shore rotation..... I hope you like the ocean!

I love the ocean. I'm good to go. Whenever we're in port I basically get paid for doing nothing cuz my job is only needed out at sea so I'll have more time to go to classes this way.

More advice:

Your recruiters have lied to you (about almost everything), You should make sure that you have EVERYTHING in writing!...... Did they offer you a bonus when you signed?(get that in writing if they did). Do you have a garenteed "A" school (I know that they said yes, but is it in writing?)

The officer programs are VERY difficult to enter once you are an enlisted person! Seems that they like people who were smart enough to go to school BEFORE entering the Navy, rather than people who chose the long route.

Oh, and most importantly ..... no matter what they told you..... you STILL can get out of your contract BEFORE you actually join next year! You do the REAL signing when you get there.

Last chance..... get your degree FIRST!

My recruiter didn't lie to me about shit and yes he told me I can back out at anytime before the 25th of June 2002 and yes I am guaranteed my "A" school.

4 years which will definitely not be a waste.

Ok well time will tell....... what are your plans after those 4 years?

Congrats and good luck SG ! :)

*Whispering* Psssst By the way . . . your going to have to find something other than cows to tip over at sea now. hehehe :spin: :FRlol:

i think you mean you'll have more time to be getting shit jobs that you will be stuck doing till you are at least an E4 and what the heck is an Operations Specialist, sounds kinda Subways "sandwich artists"

oh and your Officer Program. You have to wait till you are an E4. and with Navy promotions, you are going to be looking at 3 1/2 to 4 years till you pick up 3rd class (E4) if you are lucky, i have heard of countless individuals waiting 5 or 6 easy. You really should reconsider going in with a commision first, get a degree then enlist. and whether you like the ocean or not have not a damn thing to do with wether you will like to be out at sea or not. looking out at a vast ocean for 6 months at a time gets old, it not like you are going to be riding the waves with the wind in your hair and shit like that, you are going to be in a tin can working your ass off and hating ship life..these are the realities. I am an active duty Marine BTW, and I been aboard ship alot.

Congrats SG!! Definitely go the Officer route if you can...your life will be a lot better.
Good to see you posting again...thought you might have gotten swept away with those tornados that hit Wisconsin last week. V3

I'm considereing re-enlisting to go Force Recon....get my scuba bubbles...WHAT UP!?!

Congrats SG. Hope you enjoy your time in. I'm going into Marine Corps after highschool next year. What exactly will you be doig as an Operations Specialist?

HAHA! thanks pitbull! :D

Operations specialists operate radar, navigation and communication equipment in the combat information center (CIC) aboard ship. The CIC is where the air, surface and underwater tactical situations are plotted, observed, evaluated and commuinicated. OS's communicate with other ships and aircraft as well as with other departments of their own ship.

The duties performed by OS's include:
*electronically detecting and tracking ships, aircraft and missiles
*interpreting radar display, distinguishing between ships, aircraft, missiles and natural objects or disturbances
*identifying ships and aircraft as friendly or enemy and determining their distances, bearings and altitudes
*providing data for safe navigation and a variety of tactical changes
*plotting tracks for air and surface targets
working as part of search-and-rescue teams
*operationg radiotelephones
*functioning in the tactical nerve center (CIC) of thier ship as part of the command and control team
*assisting in evaluating tactical situations

Godzilla....I'm most likely going in as an E3.

Ok, I wasn't trying to piss you off (guess I did), I was just trying to share some experiences with you.

Don't worry about the promotion rate that Godzilla was talking about.... it's different for each rating. It depends on how over-manned/under-manned a rating is.

I went in as an E-1 and by the time bootcamp was over, I was an E-3 (I kicked some ass:D )..... As an ET, I was garenteed E-4 when I graduated "A" school.

However, on my first test for E-5... I Aced it.... and still didn't get promoted because I didn't have all the bullshit awards and shit that the salt-ier people had....made E-5 the next time (now just over 2 years of service).... but I didn't make E-6 by the time I got out (again... the salt-ier guys had the advantage)

If I remember right, I think OS's make rate fairly quickly... but that may have changed in the last few years.

About the officer programs.... They only let a few enlisted's in each year, and there is VERY stiff competition for those..... (that's why I suggest getting degree before hand)..... Oh, and don't get married or have kids for a while..... because it truely makes it harder to make an officer program!

You will see that married people get paid more than single people for doing the same job..... don't let this drive you into marrage just for the money..... I've seen MANY navy marrages go bad real quick..

Basicly, have fun, stay single, use protection, and work your ass off..... and you will do ok :fro:

Gin....sorry I went off bout the recruiter thing but I'm so sick of hearing that shit. My recruiter and I are way tight and he would never fuck me over. I've known him forever and I have him figured out. He's da shit. Thanks for all the advice!

I know you guys will probably think going into the Coast Guard is gay, but it is a family thing.... My uncle is a captain out in Alaska, I wanted to enlist and go right to boot camp, he told me to get my bachelors, go to OCS(officer candidates school), and you'll be a lot happier, pay is better and life is better starting out as an officer. Honestly, I hate college a lot right now, but if it is going to matter later on, why not just get it over with?

But good luck Sailor Girl, enjoy the NAVY...

Coast Guard isn't gay. It's not hardcore......but it's not gay. Props to ya....I'm still applying for ROTC and if I don't get it now I can re-apply next year and so on. Good luck to ya..

I'll show u some semen....open ya mouth!!! I'm glad u followed threw w/ your plans. It's a big commitment. Make sure that u start running, and are in shape. If u kick ass in bootcamp, u can get promoted too.....I got promoted out of boot for being #1, then went to my follow up school and was #1, then got promoted again.:fro:

That's the plan. I have a ton of shit to study and I'm gonna PT with the recruiter and shit. I'm gonna kick some royal navy ass.

Good for you SG!

haha!

Thanks Sassy....the bell bottoms are DEFINITELY in! haha!

SG You are in for a RUDE SUPRISE!

THE shit is never like the recruiter says..I heard the same Bullshit..apparently nothing has changed how they con people...and I knew my recruiter for years......before I finally got stupid enough to enlist.....should have finished college FIRST....Gin is right on the money..... and you won't be sitting on your ass doing nothing when you are in port either......not trying to flame you....but it isn't nearly as rosey as you think...and the people who have the toughest time dealing with it are young people.......... :o
Best of luck.....hope you do like I did....travel and take duty stations outside of this country.....see how others live.........and prepare yourself for the future while you are in......once I found out what it was like......I just worked for the day to get out........
