I Did It! I'm A Squid!!!

HAHA! thanks pitbull! :D

Operations specialists operate radar, navigation and communication equipment in the combat information center (CIC) aboard ship. The CIC is where the air, surface and underwater tactical situations are plotted, observed, evaluated and commuinicated. OS's communicate with other ships and aircraft as well as with other departments of their own ship.

The duties performed by OS's include:
*electronically detecting and tracking ships, aircraft and missiles
*interpreting radar display, distinguishing between ships, aircraft, missiles and natural objects or disturbances
*identifying ships and aircraft as friendly or enemy and determining their distances, bearings and altitudes
*providing data for safe navigation and a variety of tactical changes
*plotting tracks for air and surface targets
working as part of search-and-rescue teams
*operationg radiotelephones
*functioning in the tactical nerve center (CIC) of thier ship as part of the command and control team
*assisting in evaluating tactical situations

Godzilla....I'm most likely going in as an E3.

My recruiter didn't lie to me about shit and yes he told me I can back out at anytime before the 25th of June 2002 and yes I am guaranteed my "A" school.

Ok, I wasn't trying to piss you off (guess I did), I was just trying to share some experiences with you.

Don't worry about the promotion rate that Godzilla was talking about.... it's different for each rating. It depends on how over-manned/under-manned a rating is.

I went in as an E-1 and by the time bootcamp was over, I was an E-3 (I kicked some ass:D )..... As an ET, I was garenteed E-4 when I graduated "A" school.

However, on my first test for E-5... I Aced it.... and still didn't get promoted because I didn't have all the bullshit awards and shit that the salt-ier people had....made E-5 the next time (now just over 2 years of service).... but I didn't make E-6 by the time I got out (again... the salt-ier guys had the advantage)

If I remember right, I think OS's make rate fairly quickly... but that may have changed in the last few years.

About the officer programs.... They only let a few enlisted's in each year, and there is VERY stiff competition for those..... (that's why I suggest getting degree before hand)..... Oh, and don't get married or have kids for a while..... because it truely makes it harder to make an officer program!

You will see that married people get paid more than single people for doing the same job..... don't let this drive you into marrage just for the money..... I've seen MANY navy marrages go bad real quick..

Basicly, have fun, stay single, use protection, and work your ass off..... and you will do ok :fro:

Gin....sorry I went off bout the recruiter thing but I'm so sick of hearing that shit. My recruiter and I are way tight and he would never fuck me over. I've known him forever and I have him figured out. He's da shit. Thanks for all the advice!

I know you guys will probably think going into the Coast Guard is gay, but it is a family thing.... My uncle is a captain out in Alaska, I wanted to enlist and go right to boot camp, he told me to get my bachelors, go to OCS(officer candidates school), and you'll be a lot happier, pay is better and life is better starting out as an officer. Honestly, I hate college a lot right now, but if it is going to matter later on, why not just get it over with?

But good luck Sailor Girl, enjoy the NAVY...

Coast Guard isn't gay. It's not hardcore......but it's not gay. Props to ya....I'm still applying for ROTC and if I don't get it now I can re-apply next year and so on. Good luck to ya..
