Hughes vs GSP

So after watching Matts last two fights I'm wondering if it wasn't his twin brother fighting before pretending to be Matt. He looked nothing like the hughes that won the tittle and beat Royce Gracie.

Royce gracie isn't a skilled striker like hughes. Also, royce isnt anywhere near as fast and strong a st. pierre. Matt has been working on his striking alot and thinks he can stand toe to toe with people. He cant, yet. He needed to shoot bigtime on st, pierre and get him mounted. He needed to win by submission or ground and pound. Hopefuly he realizes this and corrects it. He needs to go back to his wrestling roots.

GSP dominated the fight in all areas bare non!!! he owned the stand up game, blocked all his shot attempts, and did what he said he was going to do, hunt him down!

the days of wrestlers shooting in and getting takedowns is comming to an end at the elite levels of mma...all the top fighters who are succesfully taking guys down are doing it from the clinch position now. tomany fighters have takedown defense now at the top levels. this sport is always evolving!

The bar of M.M.A. has definitely been raised! I can't believe that Hughes realied on his boxing training, which he mentioned was going to help him. He must had fogotten that he is a wrestler not a boxer. I think his wrestling skills couldn't have even given him much power against the RUSH! Keep your eye on the "Anderson Silva" type fighters, once again- the bar of M.M.A. has definitely been raised!

Matt Hughes is finished..........

i wouldnt say that...hughes could still hold his own against most fighters in his weight div,he could easily beat guys like matt sera. just not gsp.gsp's game is too complete!

GSP is a fucking animal, the man takes a beating like no one ive seen and look at his frame, the man is the definition of the prime male specimine as far as fitness goes. I thought GSP would win, even though I dont like him after talking shit about babalu, im not a big hughes fan either though. But how about the GSP and penn fight? GSP was deff. winded by the last round but he was going hard still

GSP just kept Hughes at the end of his jab the entire fight. Hughes never could get off an effective shot because GSP controlled the distance the entire time. GSP kept backing him up with leg kicks and jabs and moved in and out and angularly. Perfect wrestler killer striking much like Mo Smith vs. Mark Coleman: Do your damage, then reset the distance so he cannot time and shoot off your strikes.

Hughes will be back. He'll make adjustments for the rubbermatch. He's not a shot fighter.

Wow, one loss and you're finished? Everyone loses, especially to a guy like GSP, Hughes is still a dominant fighter.
I read in a magazine last week, Grappler i think that Hughes has 2 more fights left then he wants to retire. this was before the GSP fight, so i dont know if there will be a rematch, hughes is too old and slow for stand up and bouncing around when compared to the speed and youth of gsp, the man's impressive, was sad to see hughes go down, he really didint look his best and i hated watching it knowing he was going down.

Hughes is a warrior and a stand up guy. He will not end his fight career with this loss, GSP is just now hitting his stride, matt hit his a couple years back. Guys cant win forever in this game, time passes them by. Hughes is a hall of famer, and a stand up guy. I have no problem with people bashing fighters, as long as they too put it on the line in the ring.

gsp's nose was broke and bleeding which made it difficult for him to breathe.

I agree tha Hughes is not done, but he does need to do something to get that edge back. In the fight against Penn you could see that the fire in his eyes was not fully lit. I think that he might be getting worried that he is getting older and might get hurt therefor not putting all out like he used to. He's getting more cautious and not going for it. You could see it against GSP too, especially when he saw that he could not take GSP down.

oh, dont get me wrong, he took a beating, i was surprised he won with how still impressive bj fought, and put some GOOd marks on the face of GSP. but he looked more fresh than BJ did, thats for sure

I cant believe how you people, well some, act like Matt Hughes is finished or can't beat St. Pierre... I think these guys could beat each other on any given night. Matt tried to stand up against him. Not good. He needed to shoot more. He is a world class wrestler. Get GSP down and mount him.

And as for GSP, he played it perfect. Kept matt hughes at distance using the jab and kicks. Matt couldn't shoot effectively from that far.

GSP is great, but beatable. Look at his match with The Prodigy. The welterweight division is great. I hope BJ gets better.

matt hughes will shoot on gsp 20 times and maybe get a takedown once! gsp has great takedown defense. mma is constantly evolving and right now all the fighters who have good clinch techiques are winning. if a guy has a great clinch he can keep the fight standing or take his opponent down. look at fedor. he can take a guy down from any where! he doesnt have to shoot in on a guy 10 times wasting energy hoping to get him down.

It all depends on setting up the shoot. Even if he succeeds one time out of twenty, theres a good chance the fight can end on that take down. Now for me, this just goes for matt hughes. The whole world knows he isnt the best striker. he wont outstrike st pierre.

GSP talked trash about Babalu
where can I read that

I originally always liked st pierre but i changed my opinion of him when he dissed matt after matt won against BJ penn. The reason i say he's finished is because once someone has ur number that's it. St. Pierre has Matt's number... I must admit it's easy to like and hate both of these guys but at the time of the win i wasn't mad about it even though i wanted Matt to win. But then after a day i like that st. pierre won.. he talked smack and backed it up.. After watching the fight you can tell Matt is out matched. ST.P is taller has a longer reach and also a little muay tai to add to his arsenal. The days of the wrestler are over unfortunaley.. And i'm a wrestler guys so this is painful...

Well i kinda understand what your saying. But matt knows what GSP does now. He can cater to fighting his fighting style.

And he only said that because Matt hughes said that after GSP beat Penn. It was kinda like revenge. But everyone loves GSP because he is very appreciative and nice. I dunno, i think this could be the beginning of a great rivalry.

lol so you don't like GSP because he's honest?
who in the hell was impressed with Matt's performance?
he got the shit beaten out of him until Penn seperated his own ribs...
cmon now

I began to dislike GSP after he went in front of the entire arena and tried to diss him after he won. key words.. after he won.. I understand trash talking but even GSP apologized for it and as a huge ufc fan i accepted it. This rivalry IMO wont last long... And I honestly don't think GSP will hold the belt as long as Matt did. But i do wish him luck he's a good entertainer

Hmm.. thats weird. Matts performance wasn't that great in the Penn fight. I think Penn can beat hughes and St. Pierre. Not saying he can beat them alot, but i think we can beat gsp 3 out of 10 times.

I agree Penn can beat them both. He just needs to get serious and train for 5 rounds instead of 1. then maybe he wouldnt run out fuel.

penn is a natural, thats whats beautiful about watchin him, he doesnt have to be overwhelmingly powerful and lightning fast, his technique is so fluid, and his striking so well placed (dont ge me wrong he does have some heavy hands) but not only that, he can do some AMAZING things on the ground too with that flexibility, and his take down defense is impecablei love watching BJ fight

agreed

Give GSP some credit - he is an incredible athlete, great physical shape, good takedown defense, good submissions, good striking and kicking, good chin. He's younger and more charismatic than Matt. I am glad to see a new champion.

Watch Hughes vs. St. Pierre I - GSP pushed the action and was doing well until he made a newbie mistake and left his arm extended, setting up Matt's armbar.

Since then he has beaten some tough competition, even DOMINATING a highly regarded Frank Trigg and getting a decision vs. an in-shape BJ Penn.

After watching Hughes vs. Penn II and Hughes vs. GSP I think it's pretty obvious that anyone with a decent takedown defense who can strike will beat him every time. He is a natural wrestler and despite working on his stand-up still has a long way to go.

Hughes vs. GSP III - GSP by KO in the 1st or 2nd round.

Matt Serra is terribly outgunned in his title shot vs GSP, although he is touch I give it to GSP via KO in the 1st round.

Although UFC has a very deep roster at Welterweight I don't see anyone at GSP's level right now. Diego is fast on the rise but again, he is a wrestler. I think a Penn vs SGP rematch might be interesting.

GSP did have a very good pace
his stamina is amazing and he's right
people can't handle his rythym/pace
I don't personally think that I can capitalize on mistakes quite as quickly as GSP but I like the idea of presure till they slip up

I agree with pressure at all times. Why would you want to give the other guy time to think and regroup. Always pressure them never let up.

Sometimes the guy doing the pressuring has to take a think break.

I really don't like using doubles and singles from range anymore myself. Especially if the fight allows for knees. I wish I could find a good greco or judo trainer where I live I would seriously consider cross training that.

Matt's standup has improved, but not enough. That was his mistake.

I agree with that, they forgot to have him tuck his chin and keep his hands up. Tons of wrestlers have a tendency to square up when looking for a takedown creating that much more of a target.

I liked GSP's leg kicks, not the ones to the nuts but when Hughes checked and got swept, that was classic to me....
