How Young is to young to buy a boy a rifle?

My sister wanted me to ask this on the internet so I said sure why not. Her husband and his father bought her 7 year son a rifle. At first she thought they just bought it for him for when he got older but now they want to take him to the rifle range and shoot it. What do ya'll think is 7 to young or not? I don't think I had my first rifle until I was 11 or 12 if I remember right plus I wasn't even that safe then.

I was 8 when I fired my first 22.

I was 9 when I fired my first shotgun. 10 guage pump. knocked my ass just about out!

I would say 12 - 14 is a reasonable age to actually own a rifle.

Why not?

The liberals will get on here and scream holy hell.. but if at a young age he is taught to respect a firearm under the close supervision of his father. I think that is a perfect age.

Dballer,

Do you really think you can impress upon a kindof a immature 7 year the importance of gun safety? I mean I know what you are saying about the father teaching him safety but 7? I mean they don't even let kids drive until they are 15.

I don't remember how old I was but I sure remember that shotgun thing LOL. A 10 guage is pretty rough for a 9 year old - didn't your family like you????

It depends on the father. It depends on how he is going to raise his child. But yes. I believe that a 7 year old could handle learning about guns. I do not think I would allow him to run off with a firearm alone. But I think it is a fine age. During the civil war the men of the house were boys. They learned to respect firearms and also to use them and handle them as adults. The only diffrence in a child today is the parents. Most kids only get to see their father on the weekends. That is step 1 in having the kid who could not handle a firearm. IT is all in the disipline and the way the boys father raises his son.

Oh kinda like the patriot when his kids looked about that young I guess when they started shooting the brits. Man, I liked that movie.

I think it is fine if the rifle is kept away from his access, except for the range and cleaning (under supervision).

I took my 11yr old daughter to the range to let her shoot my 9mm Glock..... showed her how to clean it, then put it back in the safe.

Man, I wish you would show me how to clean mine.

These cry baby little bleeding heart pussy liberals will have you believe guns pose a threat to the kiddies, NOT SO! its a bit like AAS, all you gotta do is EDUCATE!! Heres me with the little one, bit young for the range but Im getting him used to the gun environment already.

As long as the kid is educated on the dangers of firearms, doesn't have unsupervised access to them (ie only goes hunting with parents or other responsible adult), knows basic safety drill like don't point a gun at someone, ever, even if you think it's not loaded....

...I don't see a problem. At all.

I'm assuming he's not totin' the gun round the neighbourhood right ?:)

It's fine as long as he is taught right. Before I ever fired a gun I was thouroughly practiced in all aspects of gun safety, including disarming a firearm. I started shooting when I was 7, got my first gun for my 9th birthday. Just because it was my gun didn't mean I had unfettered access to it.

The results of my early firearm exposure, besides the fact that I handle firearms well, is that they possessed no mystery for me. It was apparent growing up, that many of my peers developed the mindset that guns were made you tough and that they were to be handled as seen on TV and movies - dangerously. Early exposure to the discipline of firearm handling and use will create a person with an apropriate respect for the weapon.

I was 7 when I learned to shoot. If a parent is there on the range to supervise the kid - what's the big deal? Do they think their kid is a genetic imbecile and will push the barrel of the gun up his nose and pull the trigger trying to pick a booger? For God's sake, life is filled with risk and danger - better a kid learns at an early age to handle things responsibly.

HOLY SHIT!!!

when I told everyone to give you karma.. I did not think it would tip the scales like that!!! DAMN!!!!

I just skimmed through this briefly, but I just taught my 7 year old son how to shoot and handle a Daisy Powerline BB gun safely. The next time I go to the gun range, I will allow him to shot a 22 semi-auto rifle. I feel it's important for a young boy to learn gun safety first and how to fire guns/rifles second.

You never now when some sicko will come into your house and try to hurt your family. That thought is always in the back of my head, that's the reason why I want my son to be able to handle a fire-arm.

So to anwser you question Curling, I'd say 7/8 is a good start for a young child!!!

Wow! Did everyone learn to shoot at 7? Good age!

Pretty much. I remember being about that age, and having my dad help me hold-up his Winchester 94 (lever action 30-30). One shot from that, and the resulting recoil into my shoulder = instant respect for guns.

Dballer... I got a hair over a couple green dots because you put up that post. It's gonna take me two friggin' years to pay you back.

Thanks! :D

started at 7 also, at age 12 was allowed to hunt and terget shoot unsupervised, never had a problem.

When my daughter was 4, I showed her the shotgun in my closet, I explained the dangers of the firearm to her, and expressed to her that she is to never touch the gun, whenever she would come into my room she would always ask me to show it to her, and when I would, the first thing out of her mouth was I dont touch this gun daddy, i only look at it with you.

So teach the children about the guns, and that will keep the curiosity of finding this thing that they know nothing about from overpowering them and resulting in them playing with it.
