How often do you replace your brakes?

It seems like I always need brakes. My car is 2 years old in November. It has 36K miles. I need brakes. Is this normal?

On my old Toyota it seemed I was replacing the brakes every year. Is it how I am driving? I only drive on the highway, no city driving. :D

Never I do not fear death!

Seriously you must have the Woman Breaking Syndrome! What does your Man say when he rides shotgun! That would tell me a lot!

theres not really a "normal" for brakes... I live in LA & drive like a frickin maniac so I go thru brakes about every 1500 miles... LOL!

He hardly ever drives with me. I really don't like driving. I only drive to places I am familar with....home, work, gym, pet store, my moms house, than he usually takes over....

I depends on what type of pads you are using. SOme are harder than others. The harder ones last longer and tend to squeak more. They also wears your rotors down faster. I you are replancing your brakes often, besure you don't have your rotors turned everytime or they will be out of spec and you will have to buy new ones.

Depends on the car, type of driving you and what kind of braking foot you have.

The first 71,000 mile on my car were highway - I finally replaced the pads and rotors at 97,000 (this is not normal)

Lay off them when unneccessary. I hate getting behind people who brake every 10 seconds and also ride the brakes for no reason.

Get good quality pads. Sure they cost more, but they'll last 3x longer than generic ones.

I seldom need to replace mine. Prob. every 50k miles or so.

The most significant factor is where you live.. second would be avg speed (separates city/hwy) third is how you drive. eg people in kansas have to change their brakes less frequently than people in san fransico given equal milage..

I any case, when you get your oil changed tell them to look at your brakes, they'll do it for free.

Pads or drums per axel should run you about $120 complete.

I never ride the brake. I hate those people who brake every two seconds too, so I never do it. When my Dad was teaching me to drive he taught me to use the engine to slow down the car when not an emergency stop, and that's what I do.

What about these ads that offer Lifetime Brakes or something like that? Is that a possible?

my ole lady is always going through brakes. It depends alot on how you drive. Do you tailgate alot also do you let off the gas before you come to a stop or just brake at the last second?

Be careful. I think the repair shops try to rip you off all the time. I was told that I needed new brakes several thousand miles ago and mine are fine. Get a second and third opinion.

Yes you do! Just the other day when I was following you around, you were tapping them quite often. You sure make this stalking thing difficult.

tee hee hee:D

seriously though, I wasn't aiming my post at ya earlier.:)

i found out the first month taht i had my jeep that you can ruin a set of brakes between your house and your grandma's 20 miles away if the conditions are right. i ruined two complete sets of pads and rotors in a matter of three weeks. i would not be able to tell you how long for your car... but if you dont drive through mud a lot or anything that could be considered hazardous more than highway driving i wouldnt expect to need brakes very often, like every few years or something, unless there was some sort of underlying problem such as a warped rotor or if they were replaced before but only one of them instead of a whole set

Had my Civic for 2 yrs and put 42k miles on them.. Still could have gone another 8 before i changed the brakes. Do you have front disk brakes ? If so, remove the front wheel and look at the pad itself...You can tell if you need new pads.. Also if there is a high pitch squeal when you brake now, thats a indicator that you have a few thousand left on them before the metal backing of the brake will hit the rotors.

Both front brakes should be about $100 for parts/labor...with lifetime warranty at most muffler shops...
