I think i might fall into #1. During the time i used it was as if i was constantly chasing something, some way to feel normal or calm. I never thought of it as self medicating, just chasing something. The problem is, alcohol/drugs don't help. You are just someone fucked up in the head that is now also wasted.
The problem with getting "clean" is that you have to get the drugs completely clear of your system before you can even embark down the path of dealing with those mental issues that you've been eluding. That doesn't happen in 3 days or even 1 month. A lot of people just can't make it past this initial stage and they just enter a horrible cycle. Its tough. I was lucky to have a lot of support and good medical professionals helping me out.
