How much does the bar on smith machine weigh?

Mackavelli said:
Can't count it though because you can hold that bar up with two fingers. Try it, then go to free weights world of difference. Smith machines to me feel like they are helping much.

BUMP that....my gym is the same way. I had an old man try to argue that it weighed 45 pounds but, if thats the case you wouldnt be able to hold it with your pinky finger.

Ours is a 45 bar, counterweighted to 15lbs. Its one of the newer (about 3 years old) Cybex machine.

Most gyms keep a sheet from the manufactor that indicates how many lbs everything is.

Well look at it this way. Take a 5 lb plate and drop the smith machine bar and the plate at the same time. Which one falls faster?

You skipped through physics class didn't you bro? It's "gravity" they will hit the floor at the same time regardless of weight.

I have no idea but I do know they are usually all different. I keep track of my weights in a log so I just assume that it weighs the standard 45lbs. Ie. If I'm doing upright rows with a 45 on each side I write down 135lbs x Reps. Since I'm the only one who sees the log who cares if it's not 100% correct. I just use it to gauge strength increases.
