how much do you tip

how much are we tipping percentage wise when dining out at a restaurant.
what do you think is customary and where did you get that from

I think you should always give a 15% tip if the service was good leave a 20% tip if you feel you want to leave anything less than 15 % you should talk to the manager ..they will most likely comp part of your check

yeah i served through college too, and still do actually part time, i am saying customary is moving closer to 20% gratuity on parties is 18, just wondering why when i give/gave good service people are tipping 15 and less

Because they are cheap. That's the only answer I can come up with.

You are right 20% is becoming customary. When I get really good service, I tip 25%.

CHEAP
and they most of the time have not worked for tips
they think you get a good pay check and the tip is a bonus or something

well me being a server, i start at 20% for even mediocre service( as long as i don't see the server talking to coworkers when my drink is empty or i need something). if its good service, and the server is making effort to be friendly(not annoying) and to make sure that i am taken care of, depending on the size of the check i will give a pretty fat percentage tip in the range of 33 to 50% for me to throw down 10 on 25 for good service is nothing

yeah i partially think that too, for some reason they don't know, or don't beleive that most of us get 2.13 an hour

actually i heard that in california they still get a decent hourly wage too, but cost of living is ridiculous out there so they probably need it

Below average service= 10%-15%
Average= 20%
exceptional= 25%

Most work very hard and usually your food being delayed isn't their fault and certainly not poorly cooked food.
Honestly, to be in the 10%-155 range you pretty much have to ignore me.

agreed ...if they are working and not goofing off when i need something(I am very low maintenance) will tip 25 - 30 %

agreed, if they are truly busy, i understand, and they still get a good tip for effort :Chef:

I love tipping good for good service, specially having been in the service industry

However, here's my gripe with the tipping custom. It's expected now so many don't try to earn it. Minimum effort is going to get them the norm in many cases. I say fuck that, you don't go out of your way to check on my drinks, bring me bread and all those extra little things, you're getting a shitty tip. Nothing pisses me off more than a waiter/waitress thatonly shows their face when i order, when they bring the food (somtimes not even that) and when they bring the bill. I'm not afraid to give them a big fuck you. I've left three pennies tip on several occasions, which is the biggest insult you can get as a server.

On the other hand, I'm a sucker for good service and often wind up over tipping when the service is even just above average, since it seems so rare these days.

okay for one, how long did you serve? to call "us" waiter/waitress, is out with the stewardess/steward croud, we are servers now as with the latter being flight attendants. okay now if you are low maintence and don't really need anything, i feel for you on the empty drinks thing, what is the point if you don't see the server for a while, as long as they check back soon after you have your food, which is the point you reaize that you need something, then whats the big deal, a lot of people will complain about there server coming back every two minutes to see if you need something, maybe your just high maintenence, which i kind of am when i dine, but i compensate for it with tip

yeah i wish people would reaize this, but also the people that say, i know its not your fault, still tip you shitty, whats up with that, i think most people still tip on there whole experience, i know i am at fault at that too, but mind you i am starting at 20%, if i have great food and great service, your getting hooked up, you have great service and and not so good food your getting hooked up, maybe just not as much probably 25% 30% respectively

nothing. here in australia we have the quaint idea that the price of an item is displayed from the beginning, and employers actually pay their staff enough that they dont become service-prostitutes and lickspittles so that thy can make enough money to live.

...although i generally overpay to the nearest note i have on me at the time, or in the case of pizza guys (who have a really shitty job) i give them a bit more. poor bastards.

I usually tip more if the bill is under $20 to begin with. Somehow leaving a paltry amount seems inadequate, whereas the extra bill or two in my wallet means nothing. Also at the coffee place.It's more like Karma than some actual monetary value.

I average about 20%.....

The times I don't tip generously are when the server only takes my order, someone else brings the food & you never see the server ever again except for when they bring the bill.....

Yes, I used to waitress.....

Between 10% for mediocre service ... mediocre being the place is NOT busy, it's NOT dinner or lunchtime and we waited a what seemed to be a long time or things arrived cold.

15% for average service especially if the place is pricey ... I'm sorry, but let's face it, it's no harder to bring a glass of water and steak and potato whether the steak is a $45 filet mignon or a $8 porterhouse special.

20% if the bill is really small or when the server is truly gracious -- as opposed to smarmy. If the place is really busy, and the food takes a while to show up and the server SAYS the kitchen is nuts or they're short handed, hey, I can understand you're running your ass off and you're dancing as fast as you can (and you say it matter of factly, not griping about it) you're more likely to get a better tip from me.

If I told you that I'm allergic to wheat and asked you for recommendations on the menu for bread/flour free foods, you tell me those, and then bring my salad with croutons when I said no bread ... uhh, hello.

also i forgot about one more thing that drives me nuts

"The Verbal Tip"

thanks, that was great service, next time we come in we'll ask for you, then leaving 10-15%. got one of those today, gotta love it.
