Snathces are an integral part of my routine. Never tried my 1 rm. I do sets of three, thereby minimizing the chance of injury. 100kgs is my current plateau. The halo in my immediate future should help get that up by about 20kgs.
As for the snatch being the cause of Injury, If done incorectly, squats and deads will fuck you up just as easilly. Snatches, when done correctly are as safe as any other lift. It requires a huge commitment of time to get to the point where you can preform the lift safely with any degree of intensity, hence the aversion to snatches, and the injuries that result from people progressing too fast.
I stay away from the 1rm because my technique is not solid enough to let me preform the lift safely at max weights. A coach is a must.
