How much do I tip....

I had a tire separate on the freeway, causing $1100 damage to my truck, which Firestone was kind enough to repay me for.

I have a friend of a friend fixing the damage for $400. He works for a regular dealership who would probably charge me twice as much or more. I assume he just way underestimated the hours to get me a break. Also, this is all being done with his boss's blessing.

So...what do I tip this guy? I don't know him very well, but I know he worked longer on it than he charged. I'm thinking $200.

Whaddaya think?

Sounds good to me. Somewhere around 20% of what the real, non-discount price would have been.

Since he is a friend $200 should be more than enough.

Well he's a friend of a friend. I actually barely know the guy. So that's why I'm inclined to tip a little more. I'd like to be able to go to him for future work as he is very good at what he does.

Other opinions?

200 hundre would be freakin plenty, i think even 100 dollars would be very appreciated by this guy. BTW...he is not a waiter who makes 2.50/hour and lives off tips so whoever said 20% , thats ridiculous to pay a mechanic/body shop guy.

if he saved you $400, then $200 is entirely correct. Plus you set the table for future business. That's a good number.

if i was tipped $200 i would be very happy because generally in service industries you get stiffed a lot.

If this was a regular bread 'n butter service job, charged at the going rate, then I wouldn't tip at all. But it's being done as a favor and a steep discount, that's time to be generous.
