How much Deadlift strength does it take to flip a car from the side?

Hey everyone. Was just curious how much someone would have to be able to deadlift in order to flip a car from the side.(One of my goals) I heard Manfred Hoeberl flipped 10 cars in 3 minutes, so was just curious to know. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. ThanX!

depend what type of car u want to flip. i wouldn't say there is an exact amount, but i would think 550-650. ask bfold, he has flipped a car before:)

the cars they flip at the World's strongest man and pro nationals are really just small car shells - like a fiat with no interior and no engine. They also often have handles welded onto the sides so you can get better leverage (none of this is really seen on the TV). I believe flipping even those cars requires at least 600 lb deadlift strength. I would say it would be virtually impossible for a human to flip a real car of any real size unless it were on the side of a hill or something. (maybe one of those very small ones). Think about how hard an 1100 lb tire is to flip. I've done that and it's close to all I have. I can deadlift over 700. Most cars weigh well over 2,000 lbs.

I can easily pull over 600 raw and I dont think I could flip a car

I don't think deadlift ability directly transfers to car flipping ability. I'm sure it's important to have a strong posterior chain, but it probably also takes a good bit of practice. Those guys don't practice the events for nothing.

i agree..equipped i can go 725 but not enough i believe to flip a car. i would say pullin over 900 is a safe possibility unless they are car shells. tb

very true, but I still can almost guarantee that nobody could flip an average sized car or large car unless it has been gutted, even with perfect technique. That's 3,500 lbs or so--I don't think you could do that even if you had Magnus Ver's technique, Garry Frank's deadlift and the world record clean.

I'd love to hear about it or see it though if I am wrong.

then tell him to get his ass over here and give us details!

Well a car weighs usually around 2000 to 3500 pounds depending on the model of course. Now if i could remember my dynamics from college i could do an exact calculation but my instincts tells me its probably just over half the car weight to get lift. (weight/sqrt(2) maybe)

This question is like asking what kind of deadlift do you have to have in order to flip a tire. The two really aren't that relevant...if you know HOW to flip the tire OR the car. I used little back strength to flip that car, at least not like in a deadlift.

Lots of upper back, explosiveness, and LOTS of technique. Being able to drive INTO the car is more important than standing up with it...just as with the tire. If all you do is deadlift the car up...you are NEVER going to flip it from there.

Here are a couple of pics of me and the one car that I flipped...with poor form.

That looks fun! I can see myself now lol. Best damned party trick I've seen in a while, think it happens on OSU campus a few times a year when they win. Of course it a few of the doing it.

I believe that car was around 2,000 pounds also...it had a lot of parts on it that most 'flipping cars' do not. It SUCKED.

ThanX everyone! Especially Clint! Thats some inspirational stuff! Is it possible without the handles? ThanX!

No idea. I know that picking Nefi's Metro up by myself wasn't easy...and all I could do was the rear wheel from the side.

I have tried to just move a car without the handle and it hurts. There is a lot of stuff under the car and its a lot of weight. Its much easier to just rock it over.:D

haha Guess Ill have to try it myself then

Go for it. Its fun. Just make sure that its a shitty car, or in a soft spot and preferably yours or a friends car. You don't want to get arrested for criminal damage.
