If you want to do cardio w/o too much catabolism you should rely on how you feel after your session

A not-too-catabolic cardio session releases endorphins, making you fell good

Too much cardio = catabolism, fatigue and feeling like crap

Listen to your body :supercool
 
Catabolism's a good thing! You won't lose fat without breaking it down. Besides, the catabolic effects of cardio only last 3 hours. I say hit it hard, obviously not until you're all run down and feel like poop...but within reason, hit it as hard as possible.
