How many times can you do 225 on flat bench??

If we are talking slow movement and coming all the way down to your chest with out bouncing it, or arching your back then probably 10.

If you do proper reps, 20 is really impressive.

I'd rather do 185 properly then try and do 315 by cheating.

Actually I usually go right past right angle on chest. For some reason my flexibility has suffered lately and it kinda hurts to go down to hitting the bar on my chest. I don't know if this makes things harder or easier on me.

A friend of mine with a physiology degree told me that the pectoral isn't active past 90 degrees, so you're only creating shoulder problems by going down "all the way" or too far.

Anyone have input on this??

32 reps in a contest for charity. I got beat by 1 rep by my traing partener who followed me. Do you think that makes a difference? Having a number to beat?

I think it does. Makes a huge difference because going second gives the person the advantage of knowing exactly what it takes to win.

Definately - I have become extremely annoyed with myself several times over the years when I know that I have psyched myself out of doing another couple of reps when I've lost concentration through not being focused on what I'm doing...... a number keeps you focused, giving you a target to aim for!

I don't see how going second is an advantage.......if the first guy goes all out till he can't do another rep, than there's no advantage. In strong man competitions "sometimes" guys don't give that last 5-10% in order to save strength for upcoming events, they hope that it's enough........it's a gamble. But in an all out event, there's no advantage, unless you were holding out for some reason.

I got 20 also, but that was in the past. Now here is the strange thing, maybe someone can answer. When i could do 225 for 20 reps then tried say 315 i would barely get 1 or 2 reps. I figured this meant that high reps with moderate weight were better for my muscle growth then heavy weights. So that was my lift at 6'2 and 250 lbs. Funny heh? But let me tell you that me chest size does not correlate to my strenght. My pecs looked like Arnolds in pimping iron when he does the dumbell flyes in the beginning. In otherwords they really bulge up when i flex, but man i got like NO strenght at all.

2 Thick, why only inclines now?

When my bench stagnates I will do only inclines and dips for a month, and my flat bench never fails to go up when I start back doing them.

I agree with 2thick, but hey buddy why not enlighten us. I'll believe you and would like to hear by the sounds of it must be inpressive!!!!!!!!

20+ reps depending on how my elbow is feeling. Not bad for a 165lb guy!!!

I already do weighted dips to fill and thicken the lower chest, so doing flat bench is redundant. Besides, it is a compound movement and I prefer to isolate the muscle groups more for most of the year.

The inclines help to build the thick upper chest that I personally think is very impressive.

Besides that, the bench is free more often...lol.

I got 14 a couple of weeks ago, and one of the guys I train with got it for 38. He benched 455 at a meet last week-end, without a bench shirt.

Well, I will just say that I warm up in inclines with 10 x 135 and 10 x 225, then I start my inclines. Other than that, I will not mention the weights. I am now doing 4 sets with reps of 5-6. I will change that to 12 reps in a few weeks.

Not trying to show off at all here 2thick. Just seeing where I fall. Unfortunately, at my weight, I don't think my performance of 20 reps was too great. (i'm at 265 now)

That's a great idea on doing incline only. I really need that upper chest mass more than anything, and have fallen into the trap of dong flat, incline, decline, flyes, and low cables every week for the past 2 months.

Same as 2thick, only do incline press. And some may call me a puss, but I do them on the smith machine. Last chest workout I did 265 for 15. But I don't think that I could do it again. I was extremely pissed at the time and I was just trying to, well basically lift the fucking gym. Damn women will do that shit to you!!!

I like to see that some people still think about endurance as a stable part of benching.

I've never realy tried to max out for reps , I can usualy get 25-35
as the last set and as a burn out on flat bench.
We have a little bet going at the gym on wether I'll hit 225 for 50
HONEST reps or 525 for one HONEST rep , I personaly think that the heavy weight will come the fastest.

well my lifting habits have changed..but at 172lbs 14 reps of 225lbs..alought like 2 thick..I do more inclines these days...I dont max out anymore

How'd you tear your pec bro?

Doing heavy declines(405) but the real problem was that i did a heavy chest workout 3 days before that one and that one was meant to be a light day..I've had the surgery and am now back repping with 2 plates on flat and incline. I'll just never go real heavy again.

simple question, simple answer.

I tried tonight for the first time and managed exactly 20.

Back in the day when I was competing in bench pressing competitons (way back, like 10-12 years ago), the gym I was working out in held a bench press competition. 30 lbs over your body weight for as many as you can get, definately a little different than 1RM comps. My normal weight back then was around 165, I lost 9 lbs (was trying to get down to 155 to bench 185), but only managed to get to 156, rounded up meant I had to press 190. I came in second to some guy weighing in at like 230 *he was about 5'2"* and he pressed 270 for like 35 times.
Anyway, just a little different way to have a bench press competition.

I only do incline barbell press these days.

I don't like to discuss the weights I do on the Internet because it either looks like you are showing off or bullshitting.
incline is the way to go. i will still do flat about once a month but other than that i stick with incline.

I tried it yesterday after reading this thread
19 clean reps.....More than I thought.
Fuck tho..... I am sore today!!!!

Edited to add.....I'm at 217lb bodyweight if that matters.

Presently, I can do 14, with slow, controlled form.(dont know any other way) I'm 5'8" 174lbs, and not on any gear for awhile now (6mths). But we some guys in my gym that are 162lbs yanking up 315 with good form. I hate these guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not really...

... a simple question and not really a simply answer.
At the NFL combine in Indy, you must reach a full lockout, touch your chest w/ bar while feet remain flat on the floor and back and butt remain flat on the bench. THe bar must follow a smooth , full range of motion. However NO PAUSE is required. IF any of these criteria are in question the current rep will not count. Needless many guys lose about 5-8 reps from their previous attempts. My best was 30 reps... if I were to test at the NFL combine I can honestly say I would be lucky to get 24 reps.

225lb...5 reps on Monday. UHHHH! In January I did 405 for 2. For those who don't know, my rotator cuff is going through a transitional period at the moment...IT"S ABOUT TO TEAR IN HALF.

14-15 with 16 being the most I have done Depends how strong i feel that day. Also I usually try not to burn up with it though...so I wonder how many I can really do now.

Or look like a pussy beside those that are bullshitting...

i dont do it with 225 but i end with 315 for as many as i can do and i have done it 16 times for my best and regulary do it 14 or so no help.. flat hurts my shoulders now after all the years of heavy lifting.. had a very monor tear doing 405 8 times at 230 before precontest diet in 96...never do that again!!

I've torn both pecs! One pec 4 years ago and the other
2 months ago...and I'm only 24.
I did about 50 quick reps years ago.My max was about 500.
Didn't help to stay away from flat benches as this second tear
happened on smith incline.

I did alot of hammer incline presses before the tear.I managed
8 reps with 250 per arm.How much have you done on this
machine?

Damm I feel good now, I thought I was weaker

I am not here to brag just to post my #'s

225 for 31 controlled reps

Max at 390

I weigh 174lbs. 5'8"

Everyone tells me I am strong for my size but there is always someone out there who is stronger and bigger. I want to be that guy.

Honestly I don't really care how much I can bench I would be happy Maxing at 315 and looking bigger than I do.

Later Bro's

17 yrs old...i can do 225 3 sets of 6--only have taken creatine, protein, glutamine, xzenadrine. the most i ever maxed was 265. im thinkin about losing some fat and gettin down a little in weight and possible compete in a bench press competition they have in my city. im 5'9 180, wanna get cut up at about 175 and be able to bench 100lbs over my weight...thats my goal right now. lata, juice17

Holy shit. I'm surprised you ended up tearing the other pec instead of Re-tearing the previously torn one.
Scary shit..

My thoughts exactly. WHO CAN BENCH 3 TIMES THEIR BODY WEIGHT OR SQUAT 4 TIMES THEIR BODY WEIGHT? TO ME THAT IS IMPRESSIVE. I never saw anybody do it in person. To me that is a FREAK, in terms of pushing some weight.

I haven't tried to rep out with 225 in a while but the last time i did with 315, I did 17 reps so I would guess in the mid 30's with 225. Have not benched in over 2 months though since I partially tore my pec doing 405 for 5. Heavy benching is NOT something to do every week, as I've learned.

holy shit!!! are my eyes playing tricks on me......or did I just see a post from jacked4real saying he could bench more than 150lbs???? I thought you left boy, you know, after your photoshop job was discovered??
