How Many Black People are in Positions of Power?

I think if you're well qualified, then you're obvioulsy not a 'token.'

It seems most blacks with power are only out to further the cause of blacks, not the whole population. Jackson, Sharpton and the like.

Those are just certain liberal blacks. They get all the media attention and the Democratic leaders love them, but they don't represent all blacks. (definitely not me)

First of all, you display ignorance by describing Colin Powell as a token. He served in the Army with distinction for over 30 years and rose to the rank of General long before he entered politics. He fought in Vietnam and served in Korea. You should read his book (My American Journey). He was sought after by both major parties as a Presidential Candidate but turned it down. Had he run, he would be President of the United States, and leader of the free world (your leader).

I'll name a few other black leaders, but I'd rather you do some research and become more informed before making assumptions. I'll name key leaders in not just politics, but business, the military and otherwise.

Clarence Thomas (Supreme Court Justice)
Walter Williams (Economist)
Thomas Sowell (Sociologist/Writer)
At least 10 Generals in the Army today.
Oprah Winfrey (Hugely successful entertainer/producer)
Magic Johnson (Former Pro Athelete, Succesful CEO and Movie Producer)
James Johnson (Publishing Company Giant)
JC Watts (Leading Congressman and future Senatorial Candidate)
Alan Page (Leading Judge in the state of Minnesota)

"Token" in the sense that I am using is defined in the dictionary as "One that represents a group, as an employee whose presence is used to deflect from the employer criticism or accusations of discrimination.

In Republican politics, Powell is a token black male. he certainly does deserve it (and I said that in my first paragraph and you failed to acknowledge) but he is the almost the only one. They certainly does not represent the 12% of the population that is black in the US.

And as for your list, it is very short for people taht make up 12% of the population. Take a look at prominent Jewish people (who make up 2% of the US population) and it dwarfs any list of black people with power.

The same goes for hispanics (but not to the same degree).

It is sad that you cannot acknowledge such a blatant form of institutional discrimination... Or is it that you believe that most black folk ain't got what it takes to carry their fare 12% in positions of power?

Most blacks don't have the education to "carry their fare 12% in positions of power." We've all seen the statistics regarding more black males in prison than in college. But, w/o turning this into another "we need afirmitive action and reparations" thread, you can't expect power without education.

How many folks from Montreal have done anything significant for the world as a whole lately?

Bueller....Bueller......Anyone??

I hate to say this, I really do. But from my experiences and only mine, when black people have obtained positions of power where I have worked, they have abused it. It went straight to their heads and their self importance was inflated and they were and are total assholes and many are racist.

2 thick you've got to get off of this affirmative action kick. You think every group should be represented in every field based on thier percentage of the population? So in Congress there should be 12% Black, 50% women, 10% gay, X% Hispanic, Y% Left-handed, etc, etc. That is ludicrous.

If you think blacks are underepresented, just take a look a what the landscape looked like 30 years ago okay? Obviously it has gotten a lot more fair and will continue to. You can't just appoint a certain number of a certain type of population just to make it "fair". Our politicians are elected and our other leaders must earn their positions and I'm sorry but that just takes some time.

I'm still waiting for you to tell me what anyone from Montreal has done for the world lately that is significant.
