if a virus has a high capability of mutating then it can develope DNA (RNA cuz it's a virus) that forms a protein/carb coating that makes it more stable in air.

this is what SARS did. the corona virus mutated into an airborne sub species. SARS won't be the last virus to accomplish this feat. HIV mutates more than corona virus.

Seeing that the HIV virus dies when it contacts oxygen, I doubt that it will make that mutation for another thousand or so years.

One other factor is that the ones that survive in the air still need a transport vector. the virii are too large to float around in the air by themselves.
