They now realize exactly what can happen.... They have been being told for years and years and now that its done I am sure it will scare many residents off.

Some of the historic District was destroyed... sure if a residential home is destroyed you can rebuild.. but these buildings can't be rebuilt in org form. NO culture, and history that brought tourists in. With alot of this now gone I can't see the city ever being the same.

You're right. Surely, you cannot rebuild historic monuments.

Everyone around here found out horrifying news post-Ivan. If your home is more than 51% destroyed, then you have to bring the original property up to Miami-Dade Hurricane code or build a completely new structure to code. Don't know if that is mandated by the State Of Florida or Federally. It would be impossible to bring those historic houses to code.

When they show a sea of rooftops poking out of the water, I look at that and think that most of those houses will have to be bulldozed. How long can a house sit in standing water before the foundation and/or structure are terminally compromised?

Apparently a lot of the French Quarter was spared from the worst of the flooding, and much of it is high and dry.
