How hard is it to get anxiety meds?

Hey guys well I'm sick of my SA so after years of suffering with it I'm gonna see a psychiatrist. My question is , for anyone whos everyone experienced such a thing: are the meds hard to get? Are psychiatrists like dermatologists in the sense that they'll only give you actual medication if your case is rather severe? I think I have mine pretty bad (eg: afraid to walk into my dorm through the front door fearing I might have to say hi to people on my floor, afraid to raise hand in class, turning bright red and sweating when playing the "name game", etc.) And do psychiatrists usually prescribe meds or do they go for the therapy route more often? I'm sure their therapy (CBT) works but I just want some damn meds because I think they'd produce a more drastic change.

if you smoke weed stop. if not talk to doc about lexapro. try to not go on meds if possible! you will never feel the same.

they are rather simple to get,and it helps quite a bit,ask biteme, he is on klonopin and says he is much better.

I take atvian and it lets me sleep at night, without it i worry about every little thing and dont get a wink of sleep.

sure it sucks that you need to resort to meds, but thats what they are for,and the best part of anxiety meds if you can take when needed

I smoke weed once in a blue moon...well aware of the post-weed depression so maybe I'll cut that out completely. And truthfully I don't care if I never feel the same...I can't even imagine how awesome it'd be to live without the constant stuid ass annoying nagging fears about this and that. If that means a little less brain clarity or a bit decreased sexual performance, I'd be more than willing to do it.

try NOT taking anything to start. Stop all caffiene, sugar and work out. This will help with your anxiety.
Xanax and Ativan are as addicting as heroin. Hard to get off.
I take xanax only when needed. I had a dr put me on xanax yrs ago and I had no clue about the effects. It was very hard to get off.
I changed my diet, started working out and presto, my anxiety went down a lot.
Don't look for the quick fix first.
Good luck!

go to the doctor and tell him that you are experiencing a a rapid heart beat, that you feel dizzy, like you're having a heart attack or stroke. tell him you have a very stressful job, etc. not that hard.

Um psychaitrists prescribe meds to everyone who walks in their door. YOu shouldnt have a problem getting a script on your 1st visit.

that too. it's all about $$$.

right. if they dont prescribe meds, there's no return follow up visit. you know - the ones they charge $150 for 15 minutes (5-7 minutes really)
they call me at work asking if i can show up earlier than my scheduled time.

You need a beta blocker, something to regulate your heart rate. When you get anxious your heart rate increases thus releasing epinepherine and the parasympathetic system's figh or flight response. This reaction only acts as an agonist towards your preconsisting condition.

yeah bro, i used to smoke weed like there was no tomorrow. i had severe anxiety and paranoia. damn near ruined me. but i quit. are you taking EQ? lots of bros complain of the EQ anxiety! i am immune to EQ anxiety cuz of all the weed i smoked!! i got lexapro from my doc easily, but i havent used it because since i quit weed i got better! like the bro up there said, work out. no stims like caffiene!! deep breathing works good! i just really would try to not get on meds.

and you're going to be a nurse? Scary!
Benzo's are as addicting as heroin

http://www.drugfreeatlast.com/benzos.html.
I didnt see that mentioned in that article. but I did see this:

"Because they are safer and more effective, benzodiazepines have replaced barbiturates in the treatment of both anxiety and insomnia"

"They may produce physical dependence which results in a discontinuation or withdrawal syndrome when the medication is stopped. This syndrome is generally mild"

"Tolerance to the anxiety-relieving effects of benzodiazepines is uncommon and most individuals do not increase their benzodiazepine dose. But tolerance to the sedative and other effects of benzodiazepines can develop in some people with regular use."

"The user's body adapts to the presence of the medication and experiences withdrawal symptoms when use is stopped. The frequency and severity of these symptoms depend on the dosage, the duration of use, and whether the medication is stopped abruptly or tapered off."

withdrawal symptoms of benzo's and heroin are close in character. The body becomes addicted to both in the same fashion.

Thanks for the advice folks (well, at least on the first page. The second page is typical EF shit and fuck all of you for hijacking my thread especially you gymgurl you call yourself a moderator?).

Seems like I should have no problems...and will hope for a good perscription

CR, just go slow with the meds. Most Dr's will give you an RX, but be cautious with them
Good luck :-)

yes but you are on other meds also? Trying to get off xanax after being on a yr is very difficult.

why do i want to get off? how many pot smokers are out there? are they going to ever "get off" ? and women can marry their stress away....

why, cause it is toxic to the liver. I don't condone any addiction. Pot or benzo's or anything. Life is fucking hard and we need to fight it "straight".
I was addicted to xanax and it terrified me that I was not using my own "might". That was just me...I would rather use my will and not my vice

marry stress away?..hehe! I would be back on xanax if I got married ..hehe

Depends on the dr. I'd try the therapy first, but the meds are life changing. I love my klonopin.

toxic to the liver? My doc told me that I could take klonopin for the rest of my life and if anything if would lengthen my life due to reduced stress. I don't think klonopin is gonna blow out your liver. It's a pretty resilient organ.

Resilient to a point. There is only so much the liver can clean. I am not familiar with Klonopin.

It's a benzodiaprene. Just like xanax, except it has a 12 hour half life instead of 4. It's a much better drug for controlling free floating anxiety.

well all I can say with any med is keep your body as clean as you can when taking them. Liver cleanes, milk thistle and try to juice every once and a while...by juicing I mean with fruits and veggies :-)
