How exactly does Marijuana affect memory?

Is it short term memory or long term memory that weed hinders? And if so for how long after you get high? Give me the lowdown since I smoke and dont want it to permanently affect my memory or my school work.

somebody answer my fucking question

I personally know 3 heavy users that are HIGHLY intelligent, 1 i've known since grade school and is working on a physicist degree and can make smoke pour out the chess computer. So who knows--cause i've also known some of the worlds biggest dumbasses to be smokers. If anything, I notice something wrong with them when they are NOT high. As long as your making the grade-I wouldn't be worried about it.

Marijuana seems to selectively inhibit short term memory formation in chronic users probably through an anti-cholinergic mechanism. However one paper found neuron death in the hippocampus in vitro due to direct exposure to THC. The hippocampus is a structure in the brain which is directly related to short term memory formation

I was a very heavy and chronic (5yrs.) user of the doja and went to a decent college and have always tested well. I've always considered a chicken-egg thing. You will find other studies that show an amelioration of cognitive deficits after discontinuation and no long term effects.

puff puff pass bro, puff puff pass!! did you forget already!?!

good post, the hippocampus is involved with short term memory storage (especially declarative)

THC may act on CBR1 receptors which are the most powerful G protein coupled receptors we've discovered as of yet. G receptors can have some wicked second messenger effects, and so on...

hooray for the limbic system!

Sanofi-Aventis has a CBR1 antagonist in the works for weight loss. The studies they have done have been promising.

thanks, sounds cool.

I thought so too. Enough to purchase some stock awhile back. Could be a winner. Sanofi is the same company that brought us Provigil and Adrafinil, two very novel drugs but you already knew that working in sleep research.

lol, i edited the procedural part out. i meant to put declarative.

Thats OK, marijuana isnt my bag anyhow, Im the erowid DMT, Salvia kinda guy. MJ is a WOMBAT for me (waste of money, brains and time)

Drugs dont make you stupid......it tends to be a lot of stupid people do drugs.......

Moderation in everything.

smoke some weed dont worry

ughh! i SOoo Need a hit right now too!
low on booze, no green...oh well... have to pick my ass up and get to the gym again.

Don't ask a user. Even if they said they're "intelligent" that still doesn't disprove that if they didn't some weed, they'd be even MORE intelligent.

So the answer you get is inconclusive.

Same if they're total morons or stupid. Maybe they were that way before they started smoking weed. Plenty of female airheads i know who don't smoke weed, but stupid as a doormat.

The only way is to study scientific studies. Believe a researcher over than Raggae Rob down the hall.
