How do you know if you are prone MPB?

I heard that a good indicator of whether or not you are prone to male pattern bladness is to look at your mothers father, well I only remember my grandpa as a 70 year old man, and he still had hair but of course he was balding as I think most men will be at that age. I am 26 now with a good set of hair but am trying to figure out if I am prone to losing my hair or not. Are there any other indicators or ways to know?

ive seen people with mpb start to bald when they are like 18. im not prone but im on a cycle and im shedding, so youve got to expect that. try not to be too paranoid about it. if your prone to mpb your gonna go bald anyway, so who cares if aas just accelerates the process.

The gene is passed down from your Mother's Father... Ask him at about what age did he start losing his hair... you can expect the same to apply to you.

awesome, I had always known it had to do with the mother, thought it was her directly but not your mothers father....good info

i don't believe in the mothers father thing. My mothers father had a ton of hair till the day he died, i am 26 and i started losing my hair like 3 years ago. it receeds more each year :(

I have never bought that. ALL the men on my father's side (8 sons) have the same hair pattern that I started exhibiting in my mid 20's. It starts to recede in the front corners and the crown then eventually the top all goes. I've never seen my mother's father but I'm told he had a full head of hair.

I started losing my hair at 19 or so (just a little bit). Every man on my mother's side has a full head of hair. No receeding hairlines, no bald spots...

You dont by it because it is absolutley WRONG!

The 2 biggest haorloss myths out there.

1. Your hair's future will follow your mothers side of the family.
2. If you are not going bald by the time you are 40, you are not prone and will never go bald.

Chances are that if you have a parent who has thinning hair, or who is bald, that you will be too. Chances are that if you are shedding before 30, its going to fall out. This can happen later to though as well (number 2), just less of a chance.

This is a common myth, genes for MPB are NOT sex linked; this means they are not located on the XY chromosomes and therefore it is irrelevant whether or not the heritage linage being examined is the mother or father.

It's a recessive trait, so in order for you to keep a full head of hair you'll need both your parents to be carriers for the corresponding genes. If all the males from both your parent's mothers and fathers (your great grandparent's immediate family) did not have MPB then you can be assured you dont have it. Otherwise...the odds are against you and it's pure guesswork judging from more limited data since the MPB genes are dominant.
