Many Republicans think this scandal was promoted by other members of the leadership because it was so slow to build momentum and was talked up at key points (Trent Lott's a racist, who didn't already know that?).

Don Nickles was the opposite of most of his colleagues and stabbed Lott in the front. It won't do him any good, apparently the White House prefers Bill Frist and considers Nickles to a "traditional Southern conservative who is against everything."

Still the "Trent Lott Standard" is now established as another litmus test for the Republicans. Too funny.

I think this is sad. I don't know anything about trent Lott or his political career but for it to come to an end because he was kissing up to Strom Thurmond is pretty sad. PC bullshit. Why should the guy beg forgiveness from people who are trying to destroy his career because they see what they want to see? how can politicans not become jaded assholes in that type of environment.

Well, nobody demanded his head on a platter until Nickles. And they cynically insist on limiting the scope of Lott's cumulative insults against America to the Civil Rights issue and offending the sensitivity of African Americans.

Glorifying the crimes of the Confederacy as so many Republicans and not a few Democrats have made a career out is anti-American. Unless of course one claims that support for sedition, treason, terrorism, attempted assassination of a REpublican President, conspiracy with foreign powers against the United States etc, etc wouldn't bother any white Americans. There's people in Guantanamo Bay in shackles wearing bags on their heads for less.

Of course, Lotts affiliation withThe Council of Conservative Citizens should offend all Americans, but since they are obviously rabid racists and white supremacists some will be more hurt than others.

I don't agree with what Lott said. Not many people would. He should have had the decency and common sense to keep his opinions to himself. No one really cares what he thinks about the subject, yet he voiced it anyway, thereby alienating his constituents. His constituents are everyone, regardless of party affiliation because his legislative votes affect each of us potentially. But truth be told, his is an act of insensitivity, no crime was committed.

Those of us who believe in freedom of speech should realize and accept that no matter how insensitive someone's comments are, as long as they are not akin to "shouting fire in a public theatre" that they are entitled to free speech. However, as he is a publically elected official, PC is what he is supposed to be if he wants to not alienate America.

The people should take it to the polls with that thought in mind. That's really the only place where freedom of speech truly can have dramatic impacts on our society.

Hardly a newsflash. But they pump it up, keep the focus narrowly on the Civil Rights issue, and leave Lott to die the death of a thousand cuts, and the blame gets laid at the feet of African Americans and "liberals", the traditional enemies of southern "conservatives". No liberal forced an asshole Republican to put his foot in his mouth and show his colors.
Republican conservative commentators on the Sunday political talk shows pointed out this guy has been saying stupid stuff his whole career. It's just now being noticed because he has a more high profile position.
Democrats have been very quiet about the whole thing.
It's the Republicans themselves that want to dump Lott.
Liberals have nothing to do with it.
