For the same reason that anyone who knows anything puts on plates with the flat side facing out.

You know, I'd never thought about that before, but I always put the plates on flat side out? I looked around at the gym today and EVERYONE had the plates on flat side out. The only reason I can think of is that with the 100s it makes them easier to load on the leg press if you grab them with the lip on the inside and the flat side against your chest if you have to pick them up off the floor or a low peg. Other than that - who knows why? Of course, you could say "who cares" too, but I like to think there's some sort of right way to do most things, unlike the nimrods in my gym who can't seem to put the plates on the trees in the right order even though the fucking numbers are PAINTED on the pegs! (We have the kind of plate trees that if you don't use the right order, the plates start blocking each other.) That's my pet gym peeve - I can live with people curling in the squat rack (of course if we didn't have three squat racks and a power rack, that'd be a problem), but dammit, how hard can it be to put the plates on the tree right, and put the damn dumbbells back (a) period instead of leaving them on the floor, and (b) in ASCENDING ORDER like the little numbers painted on the rack tell you to! (OK, deep cleansing breath, calm down...)

But Lord_Suston is right - I went to the gym on Monday last week for the first time in months (Monday is usually a scheduled off day for me) and 90% of the people in there were doing chest! My theory is that a lot of guys either ate and/or drank too much over the weekend and want to feel like they're really getting serious on Mondays, and what makes most guys feel best in the gym? Benching. The Monday=Chest thing seems to be pretty much a given - in the first Max-OT routine on AST's website, they specifically give "everyone doing chest" as the reason they put legs on Monday.

I hate going to the gym on mondays. Everyone does chest and it's packed. People that you see there once a week workout on mondays.

I wanted to do squats ( legs) yesterday but i couldn't use the squat racks.

We have 4-5 flat benchs lined up for bench press in one room and in the next room there are 2 squat racks and 3? somethings also used for squats. every bench was in use so some people decided to use the squat racks to do benchs(they dragged a adjustable bench over from the free weight room all the way across the gym and used that)
It really pissed me off just because the benchs were in use they used the squat racks to bench WTF

The gym is packed so mondays it's ridiculous and why is it only packed on this one day?
do 3/4ths of the people there only go one day?
Whats their training split?
off off chest off off off off.

In a few months all of them will have huge tits, scrawny legs, and puny biceps, but at least they can bench alot :)

Well i will state why i bench i monday. First off bench is my best lift. I need to do tri's again 72 hrs later, since i refuse to train on the weekends this split works for me. Also my elbows and bi's are very sensitive. So back must come after bench day which is Tues. Thurs tris , wed is off so my elbows feel ok for thurs. Friday i squat. Now i used to squat on fri so my legs would hurt on the weekends and not at work all week. But now squatting aggrevates my shoulder so i need the weeeknd to ice it down and prepare it for the freshest day of the week monday. But one good thing is i go to the biggest Golds in the State of Florida and no one gets my bench at 5:00 monday. My crew has the same bench every week for the last several years. When you bench over 600 you can run your gym as well. Same on Squat day if the power rack is occupied me and my crew will work in, and since i squat over 800 and 3 others in my crew go over 700 they (occupents) will usually take off on there own. We dont go that heavy all the time , just certain times of the year, but are play weight still has the same result. Now if i didnt mind training on the weekends i would not bench on monday. But i do mind. But i understand your gripe its known down here as NATIONAL BENCH DAY! And it is the way it is.

They'll never have big chest the don't workout hard enough. IF they sweat the don't like it and they fuckin talk too much, arggggghhh I want to bash all the'r heads in with a 45

Very true, I do squats on mondays because everybody is doing chest. I used to do chests on monday because I like starting the week with my favorite lift. Plus I like the pump I get from working the chest.

That was the way everyone else did it when I started out, so "me too". Never even questioned it till now.

How do you quote someone?

but in response to njmuscle and Island Son

I never really paid attention to the direction of the plates either but after reading this post i now put all my plates on flat side in.
:)

Yeah i agree with you on that. These monday chest guys have also been known to come in on fridays and do arms, i guess since they know they're goin out later that night.
