How big should you be, if you want to bounce?

I think weight/size does matter if you're going to bounce.

At the end of the day, a bouncer is there as much as a deterrant as he is to stop trouble once it starts. Like it or not, a smaller bouncer will be picked on by a tough guy who wants to prove a point.

People are less inclined to want to cause trouble and pick a big guy.

I saw it the other day. This bouncer was knocking people back at the door of a club.....he was about 5'8 180 pounds. While he may have known how to handle himself, there were no shortage of rejected patrons who tried picking him and wanted to kick his ass. Replace him with someone who is 6'0 and 220, it would be a different story.

All about how you handle yourself.
I'm 17, 175lbs, 5'7" and a black belt. I was asked to bounce once by my friends boss at a club here, but he said i can't cuz i wasn't 18.
One of the biggest clubs in NYC are bounce by guys that are like 5'5"-5"10 and weight like 180-240lbs, but look shredded and look like pro wrestlers. I think if you look strong, you can get a bouncing job.

Ive saw guys 6ft and skinnier than me bouncing, but knew everyone there before hand

So I figure its just knowing a guy who works there to get you in

I recomend learning how to effectively throw a clothesline. It deals with physical situations well. Throw a quick, hard clothesline and take them right off their feet, and flow right into a headlock. Works wonders.

In the good ole days bouncers where big guys! alot of lifter, bb etc...

now they are skinny midgets! :(

it's all about intimidation. the bigger you are, the more someone will fear you..mostly if you tower over people. i know a guy that bounced and he was 6"3 250, and the biggiest pussy in the world, never been in one fight, but no one knew it except his friends, i also knew a guy who was 5"10 175, no big thing, not a bad ass at all, i don't know how he got the job.....but if you think about it, if some drunks see a short guy under 6"0 & 200 pounds wearing a "staff" shirt their gonna think they can take em, and mess with em...

To answer your question, your size is plenty. I bounce at a bar/club in Boston and I'm not huge by any means (5'6 175-180). So far most people have said its how you handle situations... thats the truth. Theres more problems at my place than we need and i get shit from people from time to time but I have never backed down from anyone in there no matter how big. Alot of it has to do with respect and how you carry yourself. You should be fine.

Amen to that.........I'm thinking that some of the guys on this thread would have a seriously hard time in one or two of the cities that I have lived in. I don't think the height is an issue (but 5'6 might be pushing it) its more your build.
