Hey people, how are we all doing today? I have been reading various posts today about various things and I was wondering if people on this site (or in bodybuilding in general) are truly being honest with themselves?

From reading posts on Elite Fitness, my own personal observations at the gym, the internet, Human nature in general and my own reasons to train I have put togetether a list of reasons why I generally think people use steroids. Of course there will be a few extra valid reasons to add to my own list and I do not claim it to be exhaustive, please feel free to add reasons that I have come up with...

Like it or not, All of the reasons people use steroids below exist (some more than others)

What Reason best fits you? I guarantee that 90% of you will not give the honest reason in your heart for the genuine reason you began using steroids. Have a think and be honest with yourself

1 You felt insecure about your height

2 You felt insecure about being too skinny

3 A friend started using them and you copied

4 You wanted to get big quickly, without paying your dues

5 You wanted to 'increase your already met genetic potential'

6 You are generally lazy and unwilling to put real effort into anything you do

7 You want to look good naked

8 You have an addictive personality and better steroids than booze or other drugs

9 You were bullied at school and are bitter for it

10 You hit 30 and want to keep feeling/looking young


Well, this will be intersting for a few reasons - most of you will list your own personal reason for using steroids - which will be a country mile away from anything in the list.

There are so so many members without any pictures of themselves on this site - for a bodybuilding site I find this funny - regardless of what stage we are at, it is good to see progress pics and i do not understand how people have a dozen cycles under their belt without a single pic!

My reason for the use of steroids? Honestly, I blame my genetics as not being very good, that being an endomorph i coud never be real lean and big at the same time

Thoughts on this post? Any truth in it?

Yeah I am tired today, I am a builder and its been raining non stop!
 
well I have pics up and am very open about what i use and i think that the reason people dont post pics is for privacy reasons or they just don't have much to show that would be impressive.

i think if you truely loved lifting and bodybuilding you wouldn't of started this thread to begin with. I can say that I do it cause I love doing it and its a great way to relieve stress and its great to take care of your body and be muscular. i cannot understand how anyone skinny or fat can look at themselves in the mirror and be happy with themselves. most every male or female over the age of 35 is out of shape atleast here in the US so to be in shape is something to be proud of. i actually watch vids of myself from just a few years ago and yeah i was in good shape but nothing like i am today and i'm like 'whaaaaat?' back then i thought i looked good!!! thats why this lifestyle is so awesome.. and in another year i will look back and probably laugh at how i look today too

bodybuilding is an ART. it would be like you saying a musician who writes music is insecure thats why they write music, to me what you are saying is just plain silly and makes zero sense in my eyes. but i can understand why you would think that cause i get that a lot from girls who laugh at me for looking at myself in the mirror, but when i take those girls to bodybuilding comps they change their tune quick and understand what its all about. i think maybe if you went to a bodybuilding contest or went to the gym and watched some of the stronger or muscular dudes workout and saw their intensity and drive you would have a better understanding of what its all about.
 
I think alot of those reasons hold true for alot of people , and through my many years our reasons probably Change a few times , might be one maybe more

Fact is I have Always from a young appreciated the bodybuilding look , maybe comic books , movies who knows !

My reasons for steroids , I have always been fascinated by it , I scored very high in biology and science , and was a paramedic for some years , I love how the body works , and how how hormones interact , and I don't compete or view them as cheating , so my body I get to do what I want with it as long as it doesn't affect others negatively.

I don't post pics because I am very private , my body after 20 years does not look like jay cutler , blame genetics and many a bike accident or injury that ruled me out and I lost everything
 
My reasons for using steroids today are way different than when I first used them at the ripe old age of 21. I first used them thinking by using test and working out I would be like Ronnie Coleman or something. Lmao I had been athletic all my life but never lifted for body building. I took way too much. My nuts turned into raisins and I got gyno as a result. That cured my usage for a long time. Then I started lifting for health about 5 years ago. I lifted for almost 3 years natty. However I was always tired. I wasn't seeing the results I wanted so I found ef. I studied. I learned about cycling. I learned about ai's. And I learned pct. I kept tweaking my diet and kept lifting. Started cycling properly and made great gains. Then got a hernia in my stomach. Quit lifting while healing. When enough time had passed I came back to ef. Alot changed. I worked out for a year did a couple rounds of insanity. Got my bf back down to 15%. Started lifting. Due to muscle memory I regained alot. Made the decision that I was going to compete. Started cycle. Decided that at 40 yrs old I was never going to come off. That I would blast and cruise on a trt dose for cruise for the rest of my life. I love body building. I love everything about it. I love the challenge. I love the pain. I just love it. And I will never turn back. And yes I like to look good naked.

What a ridiculous thread and what a dumbass assumption to say that 90% of the people will lie about their true reason for using gear. I use it because I like it, plain and simple. I'm a gym rat and I like lifting heavy things and I like looking at myself in the mirror. I like women looking at me and having their little pussies get wet and I like men asking me how they can look like I do. There are certainly guys bigger and there are some guys leaner but at my age I'm in the top 1 or 2% as far as being fit and sexy. I like being able to take my shirt off and be proud and I like the fact that I'm a vain, ego driven person. I look better, feel better, fuck better, and smile more because I use steroids. It is more than simply a performance enhancer, it's a life enhancer. So you ask why I take them? Because I want to! Does a person need more reason than that? Just because you were a skrawny little pussy with no confidence before you geared up doesn't mean everybody else has some sad genetic story that led them where they are now. Get over the mellow-dramatics dude.
 
I'm a gym rat who wants to look good naked, look good for myself ,my lady, and all the ladies dat wanna bang me lol. Don't get me wrong I love bein in the gym and the intensity. Makin other guys jealous is a nice perk too. I don't think anyone's reason is more justifiable then the next. Unless u medically need it.
 
Its like in nature. Peacocks have plummage, Bucks have horns, lions have manes. Steriod use sets us apart from others. Intimmidation to other males and attractiveness to females. The beachmaster gets to breed. He is the only one. Pump ur chest, flex your traps when confronted. Watch the other weaker males react. They move out of your way, they are respectfull. Does a 120 skinny dude get the same? No offense against the skinny dudes at all. Some of em have some pretty nice women/ But thats not how evolution is in the wild and thats where we came from. Here is the deal though. there is always somebody bigger or badder than you. Thats why I carry a gun LOL!.
 
I have one reason, really--aging sucks; I still want to play hard and be able to walk the next day (or following day). simple.

As far a pic--some people have jobs that could easily be compromised by what is said on this site and while this may be the internet this world is too freaking small. On the other hand, I am friends with people on here via facebook so I am not hiding--just discrete.
 
My reason is simple and very honest. Because I like the way I feel, look, the progress and because I can and there isn't shit anyone can say or do to stop me. It's one of many ways to give the finger to the stupid laws congress wastes my money on and even dumber political thought that backs them up.

Edit: oh yeah, and I don't post pics because I get pulled over and harassed for being part of a brotherhood MC. So like Steve said privacy reasons.

Edit again: And gatemoney's reasons. Lol. Good answer.

this is an excellent thread, anyone taking offense by it would raise my suspision at being dishonest with their response... the OP is not accusing anyone of their motifs.... but simply looking for a collective gathering of our reasons... i didnt hear any verdict of judgement...

i was small and weak... im still small... by most standards here at least... lol
got sick of being picked on and shit when i was younger...
also i have an addictive personality... working out has given me an outlet besides destructive drugs...
 
I don't think the post was intended to belittle our motives for working out.......... I'd have to plead guilty to wanting to look better, guilty to wanting to be bigger more quickly and lift more, I don't see any of those things as negatives, they may come under the heading of vanity, however if vanity motivates us to push harder, to engage in a lifestyle which involves striving for the utmost possible strength and conditioning, I don't see anything wrong with that. I love pumping Ron. I would do virtually anything if I thought it would get me stronger, I drink tuna milkshakes lol. Taking steroids for me is a step in the right direction.
 
7, Everyone wants to look good naked. Ok maybe some super religious types who've never seen anyone naked might not but seriously I reckon 99% of the world wants to look good with their clothes off.


Oh and I've tried uploading a photo of myself to my profile but each time it says upload failed....

Thanks for the input people. To be honest I really did think I would get a more negative response due to the nature of the question. Once I had typed my thread out I re-read it 3-4 times and at no point was I being out of line to anyone or trying to judge people. That was not the intention I simply wanted to see if any of you would agree on my 10 reasons (which I also said was not exhaustive) You guys gave me other perfectly valid answers and some of you took offense and gave me one of my 1-10 excuses but you explained it like it was for smething different!

I was asked if I truly loved lifting - I was fascinated by the Hulk as a kid and then came the terminator films etc and after that, I needed to get big! My father has always lifted weights and had some stuff at home I began to lift at 15 years old and being a typical endomorph and only being 5foot6 my body responded well and I filled out quickly. College was the next few years of life - which had a gym and lots of testosterone being 17 - 18 many of us trained and there was lots of friendly competition. At 19 I began working as a lifeguard at an uppermarket health club. Within 6 months I had decided to get a gym instructor course with the intention of getting a personal training qualification to try and make a career from fitness. Got my gym instructer qualification - now working up in the gym. Got personal training qualification, now a PT. After being a PT for a year or so I got tired of trying to motivate people who really couldnt be bothered. At 21 got a job at another gym but as the membership consultant. Did well, within 6 months I was the sales manager. loving life - at this point I was in the best shape of my life, getting girls and working in an enviroment I love! Moved out of parents and quickly realised that woring in fitness didnt pay that well I left and went to do sales. after years of being in sales I had decided that working in the gyms were fantastic, I worked out my finances and convinced myself I could afford to work the job I preffered if I was careful. I was training with my regional manager who used steroids. He was huge and looked extremely healthy for a man his age. He had low bodyfat and said that gear would help keep my muscle whilst losing fat (I know better now) working with my manager was a great ass licking tactic (although we actually did become great friends) and the fact I had bought some from him made me more than just another employee to him. I was also a customer!. At 27 went back to work as the sales manager for another gym but within 6 months I began to miss the money I was once on. Back to sales again, this is where I am currently.

I am now 29 and the reason for my long-ass life history I just wanted to show you guys how I started training, the reason why I started gear. you can see how my early jobs just ow much I enjoyed weightlifting and the reasons for it. I have done a total of 4 basic 250 -500mg tes e cycles over a 6 year period - on average one 10 week cycle every2 years. I take gear because being 'a typical endomorph' like I have said before, I had no problem gaining muscle but along with it came a liitle fat and everynow and then I need a little help keeping my muscle whilst losing it! My diet is far better than anyone I work with or know outside of the gym environment, I drink occasionally, have a kfc everynow and then but generally eat healthy with extra protein in my diet. I like being 'stocky' and feel good a little heavier than others. Thats just me.



And yeah, for the people who took offence to this - well, I thought it would get some peoples backs up, especially If it was true and they were being dishonest with not only the forum, but themselves. At worst, anyone offended by this post would have chuckled to themselves and thought 'what a riduculous post lol' what an idiot, and that would have been it. I am happy to accept that this post has quite a level of stupidity to it, hey, I can be a bit of a dick at times.



I know so, so many people that have never trained a day in their life, start using steroids, get huge quick, come off without pct, get real skinny again, go back on and stay on because they are afraid of being small again as they have now built up a reputation for being muscular but donthave the determination (or even brains as their diets are also terrible) to do it naturally. Yes, these people have no balance to there body but they are BIG and that is all that matters. I know of LOADS and LOADS of people who do this. Not friends of mine, but people I know of through the gyms over the years.

I dunno, I guess I just fancied seeing what people thought.

^^^ i wouldn't be so concerned with what others do, just learn from their mistakes and worry about your own self. like i said in my above posts.. go to a bodybuilding competiton and you will really appreciate the hard work and crazy diets those guys do.

after some of them went in the audience to see their loved ones and they had a cooler full of food ready to gorge, they must have been starving themselves of carbs and sugar for weeks leading up to it. its pretty intense stuff and i think you will appreciate it more after going.
 
I'm one of those that took offense at the original post. To me it came across as condescending. Like, "I'm going to be honest and tell you all why I gear up but I know 90% of you will lie about why you use gear". First of all, nobody cares why you use gear dude. You use it because you want to and your reasons are unimportant to everybody but yourself. The reality is that people use gear for 2 reasons, they want to get bigger or they want to get stronger or a combination of both. This "pick from my list of 10 choices" is childish and ridiculous.
 
I use steroids because i want to look amazing in my vest in nightclubs and have chicks drooling on me. And it works!

I used to be overweight, and am naturally body conscious. I got my weight in order and used steroids to get rhough that horrible 'natural' no growth stage. I gained strength and size after my cycle naturally, but have then obviously used again, as steroids are addictive.

You are right about that. I did a show 10 years ago and it was the hardest thing, mentally, ive ever done. The diet to get that shredded and bf below 6% is a bitch. You need a certain mindset leading up to the show that you dont usually have. I have TONS of respect for bodybuilders for what the go through for a show. I just now know its not for me lol.

^^^ yeah people always ask me "why do you do it? are you planning on competing?" they just don't get it cause they don't know how hard it is. I LIKE LOOKING GOOD!! i like lifting!! you don't need to compete for it to be hard, but yeah i plan on competing myself and know that its mentally and physically gonna be the toughest thing i will ever face, but i am ready for it :)

Yes I did list 10 reasons but I stated A couple of times that there would be different valid reasons and the list was not exhaustive meaning there were many other reasons to be added. I didn't say you had to pick from my list, just that all the stated reasons existed. Still, I'm not trying to drag this thread out, this will be my last post on it. Cheers.

I am yet to take steroids but my main reason Would be motivated by vanity!
