Homemade Equipment

Judo Tom

Plat Hero
Platinum
Ok I am going to build a bunch of homemade equipment and i figured I would post the details here about what I am going to build. I will try to post pics as well. Right now my vid cam is messin w/ me but ill borrow one and post if need be.

here is what i plan on building.

clubs
bats filled with sand and tape

sandbags
sand in a bag tape and more tape and bags

sled
top of a wheel barrel perhaps rope and sand

weighted vest
old school fishing vest lunch baggies sand and tape

medicne ball
basketball filled with sand and taped up

and maybe
kettle balls but i might just use sand bags instead..

I already have in my home gym the following.

grappling dummy
full 1 piece pajama suit stuffed with blankets and clothes

dip bar
its a walker i got from salvation army for $5

pullup / climbing station
rope hanging from rafters or i throw it over a tree branch

im going out to walmart and lowes now to get some stuff and ill get to working on it today/tonite and tomorrow and post up pics.

im gonna use this stuff to workout at work during lunch.

i just brought back 200lbs of sand and a crap load of duct tape.. should be good to go from here out.. i cant wait..

wow, I never thought of using the top of a wheelbarrel for a sled
wonder why I didn't think of it
being into Judo and Lifting your probubly a good person to ask
I was thinking if you put sand in a duffelbag or someother such strong and tall cloth container, would it be benificial to practice throwing it, since the weight would be focused beneath your center of gravity?
I want to say it would help, but I also worry that it might do more harm then good with potential for injury so you'd have to keep the weight well beneth that of the people you would be trying to throw
just something I thought of once and wanted to try

be careful on the dip/walker I'm not sure how sturdy it is
the pullups thing sounds pretty safe tho I used a chain tossed over a fairly thick treelimb for awhile then moved to rafters

they are goign to let you store all this junk where you work? cool
what purpose do the weighted clubs serve?

also careful with the basketball filed with sand
I think that will be pretty heavy

yeah this is all a work in progress thing.

throwing a bag around is def more beneficial to ME then most things i can do in a 'commercial gym' except maybe o lifts..

with the sand in a bag thing you have to make sure you have a bunch of layers of garbage bags or something like that wrappend and duct taped around multiple times.. and injury wont happen unless you are careless which IMO can happen just as easy with weights if not easier. Im much better at throwing something then i am lifting it using proper lifting technique if that makes sense. but i would be very cautious working with people coming from just a lifting background

i really wanted to do this after one day while i was moving my roommate packed ALL his clothes into this one giant bag i mean the thing weighed a ton (maybe 2) and we sucked all the air out of it and i was trying some cool stuff with it. it helped most following through with a throw and realizing how much more power you had in your abs and trunk once you got the throw started.. again injury can be prevented by using the proper weight and form and not letting your ego get in the way.

yeah the sled out of a wheel barrel was a nice find. it even has holes drilled to attach ropes and what not.

the weight clubs will replace over priced clubbells or whatever other gimmick is hot right now.

im also now thinking about making some kettle balls as well i saw some plans posted on line about how to make your own but the best i saw so far was to take a 'tricep bar' and cut it in half and use that to make 2 adjustable clubbells.. i would rather try throwing around sand bags but the club bells could be cool too.

i just emptied out 2 100oz laundry detergent jugs and will fill them with sand and bag em and tape em.. those should be fun.. im gonna try all sorts of different size objects.. just to add variety and fun to the workout.

this should be a cool weekend project and ill keep you posted and post pics

Cool ideas. For the weight vest though I might consider just buying one. Either that or design one like on www.weightvest.com. I got mine from there and it's the only that stay's pretty much with you the entire time. Pricey unfortunately.

While on the subject, does anyone know how I might put together a cornerman bag stand? I need one to support my 100lb bag and unfortunately I'm not that good at building stuff at all.

but what do you do with ClubBells?
for my anbag I used the bag of sand
then put the bag (complete) in a garbag bag wich I wraped tightly around the sandbag
then put that in a burlap sack which I ducttaped the shit out of
it has been pretty good thus far
held up

the grappling dummy is just clothes and blankets and probably is around 40-50lbs .. just guessing.. ill throw him on the scale one day.. he doesnt get much use recently but has been a great partner in the past when i have learned some new tricks on the mat.

i have no idea what im gonna do with the clubbells.. ive been looking up workouts and so far my favorite is just some chopping wood type movements. basically im just looking for explosive movements and very intense workouts.. like sprints only with 'weights'

i just made 2 clubs one is way to heavy or im way to weak.. might take some sand out of him... and the other is real cool.. kinda light but i wasnt doing much.

i filled up some of the 2.5ish gallon water jugs you can buy .. the ones that lay flat in the fridge with the spout at the bottom.. they are a good weight..

i also filled up some empty laundry detergent jars and they are cool..

i also have a 5 gallon water jug that i will be filling..

just looking to mix things up and try new stuff..

Not to obsess on the grappling dummy, but would it be good if I made one light, and one heavy; maybe 180 lbs or more to simulate human weight?

even the professional ones normally dont top 100lbs.

its dead weight and will feel different.

a light one could help cause normally moving it around is the biggest pain.

its way more important to have one that is flexible in the right areas and the the next best thing would be for it to be able to support itself in certain positions.. but weight is normally not the biggest factor but try it out.

good luck

ok ok.. im a slacker in general but this isnt totally my fault.. my camera is not letting me upload photos to my pc.. only video..

well ill either borrow a normal camera 2nite or just take a vid of the dummy and all the equipment 2morrow and post up.

Judo Tom, add an old car tyre into the mix.

Using a tyre (no rim) can increase your power in leg stomps (if its your thing)

roll it against a wall so that it is standing, and practice front guard (with foot angled to the side like Wing Tsun) and side guard attacks by stomping through the tyre, forcing the attacked side through to the opposite side. if you can force it through, you can inflict major knee/tendon/bone damage to the knee area. Cheap and nasty, and worth the effort.

cool good thinking i will try that..

i am also gonna go get a sledge hammer and beat the hell out of that tire too

would also help me with 'finishing throws' so to speak.. i do have a tendency at times to let up a bit at the end in preparation for mat work.. but im better off realling finishing the throw.. its a bad habit that i need to break...

a friend of mine fill a back pack with 50lbs of small pebles. he strapt it tight so it wouldnt move and would go jogging and do other things with it on

and maybe
kettle balls but i might just use sand bags instead..

You can get Concrete and a small cheap plastic Gas Cans and make them easily . Just fill them and cut away the Plastic (or dont , heck) any Jug the right Shape with a Decently proportioned handle will work , just make sure that when youre letting it dry you do it handle DOWN so that there is no Weakness there .

Oh , and speaking of Tires , mildly deflated ones , wheel included can be used for Punching and Kicking . Cant used Frayed ones , but training like this Barehanded will toughen you up a bit .

The frayed wires I have felt. infections will follow too. We never used the rim and tyre, just the rimless tread. You need to hunt for a tyre that suits your wants. No diss on the rimmed one, just never thought it necessary.

The rimless tyre gives your partner the ability to hold it up, for throat chop power hitting. After a while you will get bruises, but when you can push them back hit after hit, you know the result on the street, even if aiming for the face.

Hardcore on the rimmed tyre Djimbe. but thats what we have come to expect.
