Holy shit...how to lower insurance?

Paulos

New member
I was checking what it would cost to insure me on various cars.

The type of Cars I was looking at (Mustang, RX 7, 3000GT) cost nearly SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS a year to insure me on. I double checked it with different places.

Is there anything I can do to lower this? I just got my license this year, thats one of the reasons it's so high. Am I stuck paying ridiculous amounts of insurance until more time goes by?

Oh...I realize I could always get a pinto or something that would have lower insurance but I don't want to.

yeah, my insurance is expensive too - the only ways to get it lowered are time without accidents and tickets, and drive a crappier car.

there is a bit of a deduction if you claim that you only drive low mileage - but the issue there is if something finally happens and they see that you are driving over 5K at that point and the year isn't over, they will likely not be happy.

I pay $300 a month for mine largely due to having to park on the street and I've only had my license for 3 years or so.

also it is different in different states - in most once you hit 25 and/or get married it goes down a lot - in MA it is regulated and very different (basically meaning it is nearly always high)

The Cars I quoted were a 2002 Mustang Coupe, 95 RX 7, 94 3000GT.

Happy the sad thing is I claimed only like 10 miles a day because I will supposedly only use it to go "to school/work and back". :(

I am only 19, long time before I turn 25.

Try going through a broker. There are some insurance companies around who specialise in sports car insurance and don't mind taking on young drivers. It will still be expensive, but you may find a much better deal than $7000.

If i were you, i'd save that money and invest in real estate.

actually your age plays a big part in it. it will go down some if you get married as well as after you turn 25. otherwise, you should check into different cars. typically anything with a v8 is going to be a high risk for a single male under 25. jeeps are pretty high as well to insure. sadly, young males aren't a good risk for insurance companies

Have your parents carry you on their coverage.

Or claim residence in a small back water town.

after the fucking dilrods decided to charge me with reckless driving 7 MONTHS AFTER the night in question I am about to go to high risk. MOTHER FUCKING DA ASSHOLECUNTFUCK!

Paulos i will pay for your insurance, it is the least i can do:D

I will hold you to that.

The cars I looked at were all v6 too, wonder what a v8 would be to get insured, probably 10k a year or something, lol.

I don't think my mom would let me, she doesn't like me very much. The town thing might work though.

How to get cheap insurance:

Turn 25, get married, and have 10 accidents.

How to get ripped off on auto insurance: Turn 21, be single, and have a perfect driving history.

It's ridiculous.

to their honor (the auto insurance companies) - they are there to make money. they all have years and years of tons of data from all over the country, and in order for them to make money, they need to analyze their risk... and the data shows that the young male demographic is the highest risk.

I'm in that demographic and I hear you, it sucks. but from the perspective of the insurance companies, it is what they need to do.

even if you think you are the perfect driver (everyone does), there is still the chance of you getting hit by others.

no matter how you look at it, young males are shown most likely to get into accidents one way or the other.

Thats not entirely true. It isnt the size engine as much the hp rating. A car with a high horsepower rating or more sporty or performance like will be rated on their scale as a higher risk. Years ago and still today car companies will underrate their performance cars in the HP rating to keep insurance costs low. Cars like the Camaro/Firebird/Mustang have roomy front seats but back seats too small for midgets because 2 seaters make a car more sportier thus higher insurance. The car companies dont want there to be high insurance, it kills their sales. Look at the mustangs, camaros and firebirds.. Insurance is what killed these cars. It is much cheaper for a 17 yr old to get a civic than to pay 2x the amount of insurance on a sports car. You can't blame the kids that drive these cars...its too uneconomical to drive something with balls.

I paid alot on my insurance with my Trans Am and had to get rid of it because the insurance wouldve eventually been more than the car. I hate insurance companies more than anything.

Palous-
Get another quote and dont tell them how much you will be driving..I think anything over a mile puts the car into another bracket. It might save you a few hundred.

Also if you can find an insurance company that gives you a discount for driving less miles a year, go for it. If you go over the limit disconnect the odometer and drive on. Its wrong to do that but anything that screws over an insurance company is well worth it. They are nothing but scumbags out to rip young people off.

I hope you are kidding about your mom not liking you.

Yeah I'm just kidding. She might not be cool with it though because I admittedly like to drive fast.

The car has a LOT to play in it. My moms works in insurance.

Every car has an insurance 'symbol' assigned to it- its a rating of how safe the vehicle it, how much damage is done to it on low speed crash tests, fatality rates of drivers/passengers, etc. as well as the total value of the car. A car such as a mustang has a very high symbol- because it would not hold up well in a crash and there is a high probabality of someone being killed in a serious crash in that vehicle.

Now, on the other hand, take the 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport that my mom drives- its about $24,000 to buy, but dirt cheap to insure. The car holds up well in crash tests, its not prone to auto theft, parts are fairly cheap, and it is not very likely that someone is going to die in a crash while in that vehicle.

Granted your age (i feel your pain i'm in the same boat) has a LOT to play in your rates, but the other i'd say 50% of the total cost of insurance is made up by the type of car you drive.

Just for the fun of it, go get a quote on a 2001 jeep cherokee sport and see what your rates would be - proabbly closer to about 4k a year...

get a 'safer' car till you turn 25...unless you want to pay through the nose.

jackass :)
complaining that you have to pay to much and then admitting that you fall into the category that is the reason the money is high :)

I have friends that will swear it is the women that should be paying more. I don't know, I've seen lots of bad drivers in my day, and universally it seems to be the people on cell phones, men or women, that are just bad - that and old people (slower reactions to events and slower processing of those events)

and builtbc83 - that is true in some states - others not so (like here in MA).

I am all for scamming the insurance companies one way or another. You may say this is why are rates are so high....but many people wouldnt feel compelled to take action like this agasint them if they didnt feel they were so ripped off. Down with the insurance companies

do you propose we just pay for all damage done out of pocket? I know for a fact that if my car were totalled today, I wouldn't have the $$ to cover that, not to mention the other guy's if he took me to court. I guess in that scenerio only the rich would drive.

I checked with progressive.com and their insurance was only 3500 for a year on an RX 7 and Mustang, maybe the two sites I were at just severely overpriced.

do your homework when you shop for insurance. obviously, you had done research on insurance rates on cars that you think you may get, but always have alternatives.

also, how popular the car may be, may also play a role on the cost of insurance.

Depending on where you get your insurance. You may be eligible for a discount for having good grades in school.

I know when I was in school, I got something like 25% off for maintaining a 3.0 or better.

You also can get discounts for holding multiple lines of insurance at the same place.
