Holding air in

Backlash

New member
I know you're supposed to hold in your air to help your lift. While that seems fine for 1 rep squat, dead, bench, etc, what are you supposed to do for higher rep sets? Holding your breath the whole time not only seems hard but dumb/dangerous... (although I'm finding out intuition is often wrong when it comes to lifting)

Who are those beauties in your avatar? Tara "Party Hard" Reid and Brittany Murphy?

Err, sorry...*cough*

There's simply no way you could hold your breath through a lengthy set. It'd be moronic.

What you would want to do during such a set is simply breathe when at lockout. Like with 20 rep squats, you'd tighten up, hit a rep, lockout then breathe, hold again, repeat, etc.

Cool makes sense. The girls in my avatar are the Olson twins (formerly known as that annoying baby on Full House).

That's them?! OMG. I've seen recent pictures of them but none that were anywhere near that stunning. Wow.

I digress, again. How many reps are you talking about?

Oh, it was just a general question - could be any number. Right now I'm doing 5x5, so I do 5 reps with a heavy weight, and then 8-10 reps with lighter weight for accessory exercises.

I really am not comfortable holding my breath for more than 1 rep. But if I just breathe at the top (or bottom) (rather than during the concentric) then it's all good.

holding your breathe during lifting cause more pressure in your lungs which can lead to heart attacks. Therefore it's not good to hold your breathe...

I really am not lifting for health to be honest...and I really think that with that same logic I can say that intense weight training causes bad joints, arthritis, and aneurisms (sp?).

Increasing internal pressure increases lifts...plain and simple.

As far as for reps...I honestly don't know man. I know when I do a lot of reps...I can go about 3 quick reps without a breath.

i can do my DE squats with 1 breath ( thats sets of 2 ) , 1 Do my shirted triples with 1 breath (when I'm under 500#, @ 500 I take a breath at the top between reps). With accessories I'm usually good for a set of 5 or so with 1 breath.
