i just got a new laptop today ok,

now, I have cable internet here.....no id password needed, just plug it in, and it goes. I hooked my laptop up to my modem......it doesn't go. what am I doing wrong here....it seemed simple enough.....

what do you mean?

i have comcast as well

You need to contact Comcast, they'll ask you for a number on the back of the modem. They will then input it which will kick your cable access in.

Plus, see if it's not in Standby Mode.

Had the same problem with my new laptop and Comcast. I had to call.... The problem wasn't the modem though.

what was the problem?.....I got a Dell like you....

Ok, and let me think of what may be wrong.

Oh yea, your avi needs Visine.

i do not need visine.....assclap

wtf....do you people go around constantly checking your eyeballs or some shit?

I wish I could remember. I think in network connections, they had me disable the preset connection b/c something that was conflicting with the modem and set up a new connection (I think that was it, but it was awhile ago). That was before I set up all the wireless stuff that really caused problems.

If the modem works with your desktop I'd check the lan settings as was stated above. Go to tools / Internet Options / Connections / Lan Settings

Just check automatically check settings. Leave everything else unchecked.

Look here assclog. You need Visine.

And yes, I do go around checking my eyeballs for loose schrapnel, bugs and eye snot.

hmmmm....wtf.....there is nothing preset...i don't get it.

goddamnit.....i gotta get one of them wireless routers too....

nice avatron by the way....i see you've been playing with photoshop....

Did you check the lan settings? And that is brazin' speed for a laptop. And's better than I'd bet about 90% of the desktops being used by people on this board including myself.

I would go to the Network settings, right click on the LAN and try doing a repair. If that doesn't work, I would delete all of the connections that you can and then try going thru the steps to set up the laptop to use the cable modem.

I would think that you would have a router or hub that you have hooked up. You need to make sure that if it's a router, that the router is set up to use DHCP or you could statically assign an IP address to the laptop. Sometimes, however, some computers don't like DHCP and in this case, I would do a properties on the desktop machine's LAN connection, choose support, see if it's a public or private ip. If it's a private, many of them will use something like 192.168.whatever and I would just type in a number above this into your laptop. Otherwise, if it's public, then you're probably connected directly to the cable modem and thus you need to enter that number into the laptop. In this case, you can't have the same IP address if both computers are hooked up at the same time or things will not work correctly.

However, cable modems can assign different IP addresses to computers unless you specifically ask for a static IP address. In the latter case, it will remain the same. Otherwise, you may not be able to connect if they assign the IP address to someone else . . .

Hope this helps . . .

Thanks ;) .

Mine came with the "1394 Net Adapter Connection" preset. I had to disable it and set up a new connection.

Bro, I promise if you call comcast, they will register the new computer as an authorized node on the network. Try this first:

open command prompt type: ipconfig/ renew

Try that it should pull an ip for the computer.

If that doesnt work then call comcast they can fix it.

Short call, their tech support is usually good.

Wireless routers are a security risk for you. And if you don't remove the broadcast of the SSID, change the name of your access point and use WEP encryption you're easy pickings for war drivers as well as others scamming bandwidth from your network.

The one that is set up now is called "Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller"

oh....n/m, that is already set up.

ok, i'm gonna see if i can get this bitch online.

I told you bro: CMD promt: Start, RUN, type: CMD press enter @ Command Prompt type: ipconfig/ renew that should pull a new IP. If it doesnt! call comcast and STFU - sendme a n email asseye!!

non of that shit worked.....fuck why can't anything in my life be easy....

weird thing is, in the netwrk connection properties, it IS connected....at 100mbps......i don't know why I can't get to anything though.....

i'll have to call these assclowns tomorow....

What brand of computer do you have? If it has an integrated wireless LAN card you will have to disable that. My roommate has a Toshiba with the Centrino card thing, we had to disable it before the standard LAN would work.

Dude you have a dell that ain't connecting correctly. I really think need to contact comcast. I remember there was this page I had to go to before I could use the internet connection and they gave a number or code to enter. I don't remember the page though.

Try rebooting with the cable plugged into your laptop. If you're using XP, the software is already loaded and it should be up and running after it boots.

You probably didn't configure the wireless properly or at all for it to work.

Try that...if it doesn't work, break out the Visine.

I had the same problem and it had something to do with the mac addresses or ip or some shit.

Basicly when they set up the connection, it was set specificly(sp?) for the original computer.

Got a router and all was good.

plug the cable into the laptop, power off laptop, power on laptop, follow these directions.
http://www.usd.edu/its/docs/dhcp_winxp.pdf

If that doesnt work, it is not the laptop settings and i would contact your ISP. Oh and only follow up to page 2 on that pdf, the remaining steps are not required, basically your just setting your laptop to obtain an IP address automatically.

GODDDAMNIT I HATE THIS SHIT!!!!!!!!

went and got a wirEless router......once I hook it up, nothing can connect to the fucking internet......my laptop can see the wireless connection, howvever, I can't get a network setup between my desktop and laptop....

AARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

I FUCKIN HATE COMPUTERS!!!!!! NOTHING EVER WORKS THE WAY IT IS SUPPOSED TO FOR ME. EVER!!!!!

Unless you want people cruzing around on your bandwidth or getting your network nailed by "war driving" I suggest you read a previous reply I had about securing your wireless network. I ackknowledge that the exceptionally skilled can still crack the WEP stuff, but that is going to be exceptionally rare. Just know that if you're expecting to do "secure" things on your wireless network and are doing things that some governement agencies might be interested in, wireless is NOT the way to go...

Not sure if this has already been said, because I am too damn lazy to read the entire thread.

But, my cable modem provider registers the MAC address of the computer plugged into the modem and only allows that one. Some companies will allow you to reset the modem to register a new MAC, others require you call them with the new MAC address.

I solved the problem on my own by using a Linksys router that clones the mac that I tell it to... now I can plug in many computers behind it with no problems.

I use my laptop for checking out Elite.......and buying and selling shit on E-Bay.......nothing more, nothing less.......could give to shits about security.

Hmmm not sure then mang.

What sucks is that I had to do that becuase no matter what I told the cable company it would only work with my original MAC and that computer was going bye-bye. They kept saying 'we have the new mac in there, the old one is going' but only the old one worked. Jerk-Nuts.

So I am assuming your new 'puter still can't get a DHCP address - correct?

still using the old pc as the primary computer....not sure about the DHCP address........i guess i'm gonna have to call comcast....i hate calling tech support....

Then what I wrote isn't relevant for you. :)

I already went through my 12 step program for EBay! *holding up fingers in the sign of the cross*

^^ sweet...I went and got a new router...a microsoft one. this one actually worked. go me!

so, i guess it was the D-Link router and not me :)

got a Microsoft......

now if i can just get my stupid laptop to talk to the rest of it i'd be set.....

Now you need to enable microsoft networking under xp. Each of your computers need a name and have xp networking enabled, and then you can see each computer on the network neighborhood. The wizard should be easy to use to set it up.

holy crap i got it to work....i am now wireless!!

i just needed to config my adapter with the correct network key....they donm't really explain this to you.....

I have the same problem!!! Haven't figured it out though. I think it has to do with the Dell software screwing up the network.
