Lemme get some info on The Krautsville.

Is spring ok time to go there? By checking out travelocity, its alot cheaper to fly there in the spring vs summer.
What would you rate as the top few castles? Is there any best Rhine trips? Is the Black Forest worth checking out?
Is Frankfurt the cheapest place to fly into?

My kid wants to go check it out, our heritage is (mostly) German. Germany isn't super famous for the touristy stuff, those ^^ are the things I could dig up that would be fun (family) stuff to do.

i'd like to visit there one day.. maybe when I go to amsterdam

Nuerenburg is a must, as is Garmish during the summer....Bavaria in general is great, and you HAVE TO go to Salzburg, Austria (not far), and then to OberSalzburg.....believe me it is eye-popping not to mention very historic...

Whats in Nuerenburg? I have no interest in WWII type crap. Thats the only place I know it from.
Thanks for the other names. I need to make a list of places and do some research. We'll probably have 2 weeks max.

Neurenberg is an awesome city in the south. It is actually an ancient walled city, and the large market platz in the center city was used for jousts in midevil times. They are also the capital of the Bratwurst....sit in a cafe (The Bratwurst Haus) there and order bratwurst and beer, and it doesn't get any better. I also don't care about the WWII stuff, and the reason mentioned these places is due to the castles, etc...and the sheer beauty. Also check out NeuSchweinstein...the castle that the "Disney" castle was modeled after. It is in around Garmish....The south of Germany is fantastic in the summer. Salzburg is so beautiful, and has a castle there that is 1000 years old that you can tour, also the Maria Plain church, where the marriage in "The sound of Music " was filmed is there...you'll love it...

Spring around here is beautiful man, though the nicest time is probably fall... very colorful.

Careful though, both can be chilly/rainy... we have had snow still in May. As for summer, not really much to do, since all the Germans leave for the south (like birds)... so Summer is the time to enjoy the Autobahn.

As for castles, there is a Romantic route, that goes from south (starts somewhere around Neuschwanstein, going through Bavaria up north, Heidelberg, some Rhein castles, etc).

Off the top of my head:

Neuschwanstein
Heidelberg
the complete Rhein river area (packed full of castles and winewards, ever tried Ice wine?) You can get cheap deals on boat trips from Heidelberg all the way to Cologne... (biggest gothic church in the world, worth seeing, if only for architectural value).

There are things to see here, just need to look around a bit: There is the whole Alps region down south, agree on Salzburg being a must see (some 2 hours east of Munich), with their salt mines into the mountain (Salzburg = Mountain of salt)

You have Berlin, probably one of the most interesting cities in the whole of Europe, with the contrast between the capitalism and socialism.

Most of what is there to see here is Natural beautie, since most of the man-made scenery is gone since WW2.

As for tickets, Frankfurt is the second busiest airport in Europe... so yould try and fly into London instead (where you might some cheaper fares from the US) and then fly to Germany via something like www.ryanair.com for next to nothing.

Thanks Pint, some good stuff in there. I would love to go in the fall, but I dont want the kiddo to miss too much school, and there arent any long breaks in the fall. I guess the weather is something you just have to risk. Maybe I'll look at June.
London is good idea, I'll check that out, I've seen some really cheap tickets from here to there.
Thanks bor!
