Hey, AOL peeps

Just to make this perfectly clear -- as an AOL user you have a button on your email inbox that says "report this message as spam." We have an agreement with AOL that if you click it on one of our emails, they notify us and we are required to make sure that we never bother you again.

The first time you do that, I'm willing to try merely turning off your PMs (something you can do for yourself); but if you flip them back on and then hit "report spam" again, I will keep my word to AOL by terminating your account.

Is there a way to shut off the emails without turning private messages off?

digger, you are a rational IT guy, to turn off EMAILS, you would want to select an option to do that.

Doesn't make much sense that to turn off EMAILS you disable your PMs. They are completely different. I can use PMs here with people that I don't want to give my email address to.

Seems like giving an option to turn off the emails would make most sense and relieve headaches for all.

Of course there is. Except we're talking about someone who is too lazy and/or stupid to use it, and instead figured it would be easier to lie to AOLand call us spammers.

We have no obligation nor reason to give anyone free PM service -- or any other kind of service -- once they've done that. Someone wants to pick and choose which switches get flipped, maybe they should attend to that before they stick their virtual thumb in my eye.

so basically in order to get PM service, you gotta agree to marketing emails?

he's saying they can turn off the emails on their own, but instead they just mark them as spam rather than dig through the options menu.

so dig is disabling PMs to those people who are too lazy to uncheck the email box.

I thought he was gonna ban people who turned their PMs back on, get an email, mark it as spam. BAND!

that too.

but they can avoid the whole problem by going into the options and disabling emails.

Please stop being obtuse. I'm talking about someone who doesn't BOTHER to go to his profile and set the email notification preferences -- which are independent of whether you enable your PMs or not -- and INSTEAD reports our "hey, you got a PM!" email as spam. Likewise for people who turn on "instant email notification" for subscribed threads and report THAT as spam.

I'm saying if you do that it's a tossup as to whether I ban your ass for being too stupid to have an EF account, or merely turn off your PMs to get your attention.

AHHH gotcha, that makes sense. I was confusing the routine marking emails with the PM notification. I turned that off real quick! When the circuit heats up you can end up with an inbox full of emails telling you to read your PM.

I misunderstood what was going on.

History would suggest that's not possible.

BTW, disabling the 'receive email from admins' box didn't always work, which is why I eventually switched my email address to one I never checked. I used to get crap, and by crap I mean real EF spam, all the time.
