Can one still safely train with deadlifts, squats, pendlay rows, and other heavy compound exercises with the following herniations:

L3-L4
L4-L5
L5-S1

I guess box moving really does fuck up your back after awhile.

What is the severity?

Herniation usually means a protrusion of the annular fibers which is the outer sheath of the disc.

Strengthening the back is something most don't do right or well.

Take a look at this:http://test.life.edu/spinalhygiene/

It was created for the World Health Org., by my old school.

My best advice would be to go slow and easy.

Very minor herniations. No leg pain or numbness yet, so nothing ruptured. Possibly just a bulging disc.

Should I strengthen the back with rows and such? Or avoid weights entirely now, then slowly work into them months from now?

Work the back slowly and with light weights.

This will promote "Imibibiition" the process of hydrating the discs.

Also be sure to do full range of motion back exercises, the floor "Superman" or "Skydiver" from the link is excellent.

Watch your posture, chair choice, lifting practices.

A good diet will help too.

i herniated a disc a few months ago, and i found it best to just stay away from squats and deadlifts for awhile. I did a lot of individual exercises such as single leg squats, that dont put as much pressure on the back. You should also make sure to get really loose before participating in any activity. I used a heat pad, but whatever your resources are.

Careful with the heat pads, they dehydrate the discs.
