Hernia anyone?

About 6 years ago, 6 or 7 hours after a heavy leg training session, I started to get severe pains in my stomach for no apparent reason. The pain was so bad, I doubled over and it took my breath away...similar to a knife stabbing me right above my belly button. I took some pepto bismol and did a big shot of crown royal(I know, I laugh about it too), layed on my back on the floor and the pain went away...didnt think twice about it until a month or so later I noticed about 3 inches below my sternum, I had a round protrusion slightly popping out of my abs. Its like I have a ping pong ball pushing out of my abs, just a little, not too noticeable unless you look right at it. Since I havent had any pain since, Ive blown off getting surgery because I know some guys who have gone through it and its painful as shit as far as the recovery, plus you cant train in the gym for something like at least a month. Ive read it can be dangerous if left untreated. Has this happened to any of you guys?

I've had two hernia operations. One in the belly button. and one on the right side of my groin. They have specific names that I can't spell from memory, but I'll look it up if it'll help.
It's my experience that the further away from the groin the less painfull the recovery from surgery.
One more hernia was found during a CAT scan of my heart that's so tiny I didn't know I had it. Since it doesn't bother me I won't worry about it for now, but if the time comes it'll mean having my ribs spread I think, which is sure to be painfull.
Anyhow, good luck.
From the area you discribed I don't think you'll suffer to much pain after surgery, but you'll need to avoid straining the area for a couple of months afterwards.

holy crap..2 surgeries? that one in the groin had to be a bitch...I just realized I should have posted this in the training section..fucking Alzheimer's settin in.

I have had a hernia and I was out for 4 months. I had severe complications with mine.

I would recommended not worrying at this point but schedule an appointment with a doc.

The biggest problem you can have now is that once you have a tear it can easily get larger. Also, and this is important, if the intestines poke out of the cavity and get pinched the portion that gets pinched can die relatively quickly (the intestines are VERY vascular) and if this happens abdominal surgery and removal of a portion of the intestine is the only solution.

I know one person who had a total of 9 surgeries and is permanently fucked up because of a hernia that he didn't take care of. He is a rare example of what can happen but it highlights the seriousness of the injury if left untreated.

On another note, some surgery can now be performed with a scope. It is quick and easy. It was not offered in my area so I got sliced open. My complication arose after surgery. I has an ileus, which in common terms, is when the intestinal system shuts down. I had to have a tube up my nose to suck out the stuff in my digestive track and was hospitalized for two weeks. All because of hernia surgery. After 4 months of recovery it took me about 6 months of hard core training to get back to where I was before surgery.

WHOA! ^^^ Good to have you back Bro. Mine were 2 to 4 hour procedures and I was out the door.
You are correct regarding pinching of the intestines. It's called a strangulated hernia and gangrene can set in. This is rare.
If you can feel movement in the area of herniation you don't have a strangulated hernia - as the intestines are slipping out and back in through the tear.

Yes as described above a hernia left untreated will just get worse. I have had both linguinal hernia done in my groin. They can mostly be done using laprascopic (spell!) surgery & they insert a small plastic gauze to constrain the hernia. Recovery is a while but I can lift more now than I did before I had them done. Funny tho I can feel the juice coming past the shit when Im having an ejaculation. Gives you a bit of warning which can be handy when trying to sync orgasms LOL

well..Ive been keeping tabs on the size of it and it hasnt gotten any larger, nor am I feeling any pain...I know I need to get checked, which I will, but man after reading what some of you guys have gone through, it definitely makes me hesitate. I hate missing workouts, but I guess dying of a strangulated intestine is worse.

I had 2 hernia's within a 2 year timeframe, one on the left side of my groin, one on the right side.

For both I waited 4-6 weeks before getting back in the gym, but everything is fine now and am stronger than before.

It sounds like an umbilical hernia. Most times if it is small enough the intestines will eventually seat back down inside the abdominal wall. If you notice that the lump becomes harder and more pain is assocciated with it over time, then would be the time to get it taken care of. And as others have already stated, if it IS strangulated then there is the posibility that infection could set it, although being as it is somewhat small and no pain has been felt as of lately you are probably good to go.

bro just had mine exactly 4 weeks ago. mine was inguinal on the left side groin. had the laprascopic surgery. felt like shit for a week, couldnt get up outta bet. 2 weeks later i was walking and feeling good. bye the third week the doc told me to get my fat ass back into the gym and i still feel a little pulling in the area but he said just go easy at first and ill be back to normal. good luck.

I had hernia surgery in the groin years ago. It's perfect now.

IMO you should get the surgery, take a couple months off to get better, then hit it hard.

I agree with this.

how did you guys get hernias? are they caused from over straining?
First one I don't know how I got it, as I never felt it happen.
Second one I got unloading a incline leg press machine. Instead of walking the plates over to the weight tree I kind of leaned forward and flung the plate at arms length. I felt a burning tear in my groin. As time went on and I kept deadlifting I eventually developed a bulge were the intestines would push through the muscle. I then made arangements to have it fixed, but by the time my HMO approved it, and the operation got scheduled, the intestines had worked themselves down into my scrotum and would push against my right testicle. The only relief from the pain was to lie down and let the intestines slip back to were they belonged.
The first one in the belly button I had for more than 2 years and the pain was never bad.
The second one I had less than 6 months and the pain got severe in a hurry.

IMO the real cause for hernias is a combination of having a genetic weakness in a particular area, and then straining that area in a way that the muscle can't withstand.
