When drawing a amount into a syringe, say 1ml, where is the pluger supposed to end?
The part of the plunger furtherest away from the needle or the part closet to the needle is supposed to be on 1??
Having a debate with the miss's!!:chomp:

I always wondered that myself. Some docs say one, some say the other. The difference is just a couple of mls, so I err on the side of "more." :)

well, thats what i used to do... BUT.... Test comes in 1ml vials and if you pull that out in syringe the plunger starts on 1ml ( the part of plunger furtherest from needle ). It is worth knowing expecially if your cocktailing a few things together.
Lets see what the mass's have to say...........................................

Based on your post I decided to conduct an experiment:

Using a 3cc BD syringe, I drew water in (no needle) and adjusted the plunger so that the edge closest to the needle was on the 3cc line. Then I emptied it into a 5ml graduated cylinder. The result: 3.1cc

I repeated the experiment adjusting the syringe so that the edge farthest from the needle was on the 3cc line. This time the measured volume was just under 3cc.

So, if you allow for the small increase in volume that the needle adds to the syringe, using the egde farthest from the needle will yield the most accurate measurment. Guess I've been doing it wrong for 6 years.

Thats what i'll be doing from now on.... Funny how something you do for ages makes it the right way huh??
Every day is a school day!

YOU ARE ALL WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and like always the needto family has the Answer.. Every one get ready for a lesson and pull out your needles!!!!!!!!!!!

OK every one got there needles ready.

Hold the needle up in front of your face. Now pull the plunger all the way down to the bottom/back. If you have a bd needle like me or what ever brand blah blah... Look at the very bottom of the needle some where down from the 3ml/las ml more Look around next to the brand name or around that area.

You should find a tiny Black dot. Ok everyone find the little black dot. its real small but its there. It is ether a black dot or a another small black line that is well past the last ml marker line. If not then you got a cheap ass needle and you need to use the top of the brand as the marker.

AAH no ones going to understand this any way..

OK now line up the part of the plunger that is closest to the needle with the little black dot or the little black line. (or the very top of the words for people with cheap needles) now that you have it lined up hold the needles up in front of your face and take a look.

You will see that the peak of the plunger. (the part at the top of the mountain ^^^^ this thing looks like this ^ the tip of it lines up perfectly with the 3ml mark or the last ml mark. HMMMMM why is that.

The tip of the peak ^ is the mark guys. when giving a 3ml injection all nurses are taught to draw back all the way till the little black dot on the needle. Ot to the last little black line. When you do the peak ^ of the plunger lines up perfectly with the 3ml mark or last ml mark.

Ok tell me if anyone understood what the hell I was trying to say.

Needto....
I think i got it ( after reading it over and over and over and over and over... with pin and barrel in hand!! ) If i have somesort of understanding that is fine if you want to draw 3ml... but what about 1 or 2 ml??

look inside the needled as you draw. The peak ^ of the plunger should line up with the line of the ml you want.

Why do you think nurses and doctors hold the needles up in front of there faces and look like they are going cross eyed staring into it. They are trying to see where the peak lines up with the line.

Wow, awesome reply bro. Very insightful. I have always drawn the needle side of the plunger right tot he line. No wonder my gains have been so good! lol jk

So I'm not the only one?! LOL!

Dots? What dots? lol I think you mean the tip of the plunger. Yeah, that's what I said. :)

lol not to worry bro..yer clear as a bell

It's where the liquid measures from the front of the syringe to the line that the liquid stops at.

pin ------I gear I plunger I------I end
............. ^ = 1ml .^

Thanks Needto, my x is a nurse and she always looked at the needle crossed eyed and now I know why.. lol

I thought they went all googly eyed staring at the needle cause they seen it on tv.... its the reason i do it!!
Least now i have a method for my squintness!!
