Help w/ broken toe!

Hi everyone!

Has anyone here broken their toe that could give me good advice? I broke it this past Sat. night @ home. I'm icing it and elevating it . I also began putting my foot in epsom salt in warm water. I'm worried that i won't be able to work out for a long time. I know someone who wore flipflops for 5mo because it was too painful to wear anything else. I have been wearing flipflops also but should i tape the two toes together??? It hurt to put sneakers on, they felt smashed but i don't know what to do about what to wear on my feet for the gym??? I already took off 1 wk for vacation and now all i do is sit around & its depressing, i really hate to take off too much time. Can anyone help w/ recovery/what i could wear in the gym? Would it look stupid to wear flipflops in the gym since everyone else wears sneakers?
Please advise,
annie

I know how you feel as I broke a toe on my left foot last november. There isn't really all that much you can do for it accept tape your broken toe to the one next to it.

Did you stop working out for awhile? Right now i'm wearing a post op shoe so i'm hoping i can go back to the gym next week. I'm worried that i won't be able to train for several wks, especially legs. What did you do?

Unless it's your big toe, you can't do a damn thing expect RICE, take ibuprofen, and splint the toe by taping it to another.

If it's your big toe, go to the ER. They cast it somehow, but I've never seen it done.

I have been doing martial arts for thirty five years. I have long toes and have broken them more times then I can count. Just tape the broken one to the one next to it, or on each side and press on. There is no reason to stop training. In a lot of ways it will help you. Training with pain that is not going to cause greater damage will force you to focus your mind and push through the pain. So buckup and press on.

Definitely buddy tape your toe. Casting the great toe is actually done with an aluminum splint (at least in the ED, who knows what the bone carpenters do).

Thanks guys for your responses! I broke my fourth toe, the one next to the pinky. I did go to the er and doc couldn't do much, but i did ask for a post-op shoe which does help me alot. The nurses taped my toes and gave me extra tape and guaze to take along. My toe did go back in place which i was worried about; i didn't want a crooked toe! I took off last week from the gym, but i couldn't stand laying around @ home so i went back this week. Hobbling around in there but i'm doing ok. Doc prescribe motrin for the pain which is the worst part. And the tape bothers me but i still wear it.
