help out a comp n00b...is spybot all i need?

norton sucks, av! it let all kinds of shit into my 'puter that avg and spybot found.

norton also slowed down response time.

i have avg set to run when i am asleep; i manually run spybot every couple of days.

SpyBot is not as effective as Norton's. Also, last time I checked, SpyBot will not continually monitor your system like Norton's. SpyBot is designed primarily for tracking cookies and Norton's for malicious viri.

Spybot does have a feature to watch you browser... Does not protect your entire system like Norton. I have had nothing but issues with Norton since 2004 so I don't use it. This has never failed me, and uses less sys memory. http://www.kaspersky.com/

avg adware, avg spyware, spybot, CCleaner, ad-aware, antirootkit, vundofix, virtumundobegone, smithfraudfix, dss, malwarebytes, superantispyware. xp tcpip repair.

^^ I have those on mine, the CCleaner is da shit though imo..sumbitch is a fast MF'er.

Also run anti-spyware/anti-virus in safe mode for extra precaution against active network bugs which may interfere with normal scanning.

Safemode- start>run...>msconfig>boot.ini>(check)safeboot>ok.

Safemode- reboot and hit F8 on bios screen or...
start>run...>msconfig>boot.ini>(check)safeboot>ok.

avg and spybot have kept my computers clean and fast reacting since 2004.

if you add on too many programs your reaction time will slow down.
